Many jedi have been turned from the dark side or light side, I feel what made his so much more significant was he was a sith lord and was under control from Vitiate, yet still was capable of restraining himself from doing far more reckless things such as Malak did when he took the mantle. He's also one of the best redemption stories due to having to walk the same path he had before, but from the light then going so far as to correct what he had done and confronting the Emperor.

also remember that when examining his assault on the republic, he left key infrastructure and political pathways intact. even when turned against the republic, he made sure that either he'd be defeated - proving the republic was strong enough to defend itself, or that when he defeated them, he'd be able to rebuild quickly and efficiently. even when under mind control and having fallen to the dark side, he did his best to keep the republic safe from the sith empire.

shame Malak went and screwed that one up.
