The show's lore is totally ****** , on a real life point of view, though.
Ghost DNA doesn't exist. Ghosts are incorporeal and, quite literally, dead.
So, from a real life point of view, this tumblr post is actually correct. He is both alive and dead, since ghosts are incorporeal manifestations of a corporeal creature that has died.
But hey, it's a ******* cartoon, who cares?

That doesn't explain how he can do most of his powers if he's simply controlling a physical body via a ghost inside.
The simple act of going through walls would leave his physical body behind, because the body can't go through walls, the ghost can.
Same with becoming invisible.

megaton (01/12/2016) [-] in the show they showed that if you were in contact with something you could bring it with you as you phased through stuff and flew. and while they are incorrect in saying that he is possessing himself, i would argue that he just became more hole. as i said in comment #40, the tumblr post is claiming that his soul has left his body and just is holding onto it barly with 10 being the normal level of alive and 5 being a corpse being possesed by a ghost, and 0 being full on ghost. instead i would argue that danny went in the total opposite direction. i would say that he is instead an 11 or above as far as connection of soul and body. i would say that his spirit and body was agitated in such a way that they fused together 100%. that would explain why they would show in the opening that his dna itself becomes ghostly. normally the spirit and body would be in total harmony, but would be seperate but equal parts of the human existance, but with danny phenton he became an amalgamation of himself. his new corporeal form is now no longer either his body or his spirit, but both blended into each other to the point where there is no distinction.

megaton (01/12/2016) [-] in fact, i would even go as far as to say that he is exactly what the egyption god kings claimed to be. he is a being that is both of our earthly realm and the realm of the "gods" which in the show danny phantom were shown to just be beings that were in the ghost realm but either never alive in the first place, or transcended the confines of life.

DNA is corporeal Easily observable and exists within every living being we've encountered thus far. . Ghosts are not corporeal Assumed, since we don't know if they even exist. . They have no body.
As such, DNA cannot exist in a ghost, or rather, ghosts do not have DNA.
There you have it. Ghost DNA can not exist, if what we believe of ghosts is also real.
