And the Sega Genesis had theirs before that one even. I'm just glad that controls today don't have this layout though, wasn't the best to play with.

To also be fair, there are copy right issues preventing Microsoft from just lifting Nintendo's controller scheme.

I think you can put a copyright/patent/whatever-I-am-not-a-lawyer on a controller's shape, maybe, but not on it's buttons.

Naw, man. Even D-pads, which look like they're universal on controllers, need to be constructed entirely differently in order to avoid copyright infringement.

The SNES patent just barely expired in 2005

You're partially right. The Japanese version (not the American version with it's purple buttons) had the colors featured above.

Others have mentioned, on the Xbox controllers the "X" is on the X-Axis, and the "Y" on the Y-Axis. It kinda makes more sense that way.
Also, you could argue that they lifted the button layout from the Dreamcast as opposed to reversing Ninty's layout.

Oh word? As I have actually never in my life seen a dreamcast it might make more sense they lifted it from the dreamcast if that is indeed the layout dreamcast had. *ponders this for a moment* That might even make more sense since didn't dreamcast go out before xbox came in? Less likely to get introuble for copying a company that went out of business hmm....

Actually my good friend Sega never went out of business. They simply down sized the company and chose to only produce games and they pretty much abandon the Dreamcast. The reason the Xbox had the same buttons is not because Microsoft stole the idea but because they actually hired the same guy who designed the controllers for the Dreamcast to design the controllers for the Xbox.

Basically, it's this:

Playstation controllers use "X" as a symbol, X-box controllers use it as a letter, and Nintendo's controllers are retarded.

Doesn't make the whole ABXY scheme make any more sense. There's no continuity there.

DVORAK isn't Scandinavian.
It's the most effecient keyboard layout
Fun fact: The QWERTY layout was created to separate common letters. This was because when the first typewriters came out the arms would get tangled if you typed to fast.
