Everyone has their own reasons for smoking, I started when I was 16 to try and look cool, which is obviously a ***** reason for starting. But equally I don't think i'd of been able to get through hard times and family deaths without being able to go outside and exit from all my stress and responsibilities for even 5 minutes. At least here in the UK smoking doesn't have an impact on people aside from those who smoke, we can't smoke inside and in the workplace or at universities have specific areas to smoke, so second hand smoking is a bitch-ass argument. On that point, it's our lungs not yours, I don't stop you putting dicks in your mouth, don't stop me putting tobacco in mine.

its not just second hand smoke.....one can hold their breath / cover their nose

what people CANT do is stop their clothes smelling like **** from someone elses poor choice being blown over them, and some people get that kinda yuck feeling of having someone elses chemicals on their skin

plus there are smokers who are dick enough to stand right outside the doors to places so wind blows their ******** inside and make it pretty pointless for places to be 'no smoking' when smoke gets inside anyway
kinda makes it annoying as **** to eat at cafes when **** from outside blows in and you have to breathe ******** while you eat

In terms of clothes smelling like smoke I can empathise, but for that reason I keep deodorant in my bag and mints in my pocket.

I think the main thing to understand is that while there are a tonne of dickheads who: do reak of smoke, do smoke right outside public cafe's and do not care about non smokers around them. There is an equal if not higher amount of people who understand that it's a bad habit, and it's not at all beneficial to those around them.

I get that we're on funnyjunk and all post should be taken with a pinch of salt. But it's worth noting that all smokers aren't the same. Also I heard that cigarettes gave The Hulk his superpowers, Smokers 1 Faggets 0

well considerate smokers are the vast minority...most ove seen are dicks who act like they have some god-given right to smoke whereever the **** they like when they like

hell just a couple days ago,,,,some guy walked into the area i do securit yat...i tried to tell him peacefully that its a no-smoking area...he started getting uppity about why...i told him its a government building..he stubs it out on the wall and wanders off mumbling **** and looking back to give me funny looks as if me and the government are wrong for affecting 'his freedoms"

or another where he works in the building and conveniently 'forgets' that its a no-smoking area when he wants to come down and smoke right in the entrance way

But still, you're more likely to remember the guy acting like a prick smoking a cigarette, than the guy smoking on a bench near a bin. Sure be a dick to the guy stubbing it out on a wall and pissing off, because that guys seems like an asshole, but don't generalise us all.

Smoke in your lungs = bad.

Whether you're smoking tobacco, weed, notebook paper, ramen noodles, doesn't matter.

You don't hear about deaths from weed because people don't smoke 20+ joints a day like chain smokers do with cigarettes. That doesn't mean inhaling weed smoke has no drawbacks whatsoever.

Ironically, since I never was addicted to cigarettes and I enjoy them as often as I enjoy beer... which is a few times per week

Even when I was a full-time smoker, a pack lasted me 2 days at work.

Ironically, since I'm one of the few people who are a bit obsessed with "moderation" (looks at 'mericans and their complete lack of such a notion)

That's not really fair. I mean the same could be said of Anime, or vidya, or racing motocross. Granted some are less likely to kill you but no extreme habit is exactly healthy. Smoking happens because it is "cool" when you are like 15-16 and some people get addicted. I haven't smoked in 2 years, but sometimes I still crave one.

sitting prone for hours has been linked to heart disease and colon cancers, along with liver issues. Also motorcycles and the sudden onset death on impact factor. Pick your poison. Cigs don't instantly kill you, and less than 1/3 of cancer patients are cigarette smokers.

You can watch anime while standing, and work out, and you can drive carefully on a motorbike. Smoking is a ticking bomb that you have no control of. You know that it will shorten your life span and limit you physically once/if you get old. Riding motorbikes might do this, but there's no guarantee (unless you're driving something like a Hayabusa or Yamaha R6 ).

I've been told the craving never goes away- quitters just learn to live with it.

And it's either that, or choose the easy road, and get even worse down the line. There's even evidence that if you quit smoking early enough, your body can actually repair some (not ALL, but some) of the damage they used to think was permanent.

Trust me it isn't that easy. If it were that easy everyone would do it.

It's not the amount of cigarettes per say it's the lack of cigarettes. I can smoke 3 packs a day and still have the same amount of cravings the next day as I normally would ( i normally smoke 4-7)

E-cigs don't help me at all, and nicorrette only works for about 2 days. Everyone is different I could smoke on and off no problem for 2 months straight then one day i realized i couldn't stop. It is scary how dependent I am on smoking to feel normal.

Consider yourself a lucky soul. Addiction is rampant in my family so smoking was a really stupid thing for me to have started but the initial buzz made me stick to it. Now I feel like no matter what I will not be able to stop.

It's probably a pschological thing too because i associate smoking with emotions. Anytime I am sad or happy I smoke. I am glad to hear you quit man that is honestly one of the most impressive things to me at this point in my life.

I would give anything in the world for someone to make a pill that anytime you smoke you just instantly throw up. At this point some type of medication is the only way I see myself quitting. It breaks my moms heart and all of my friends think it is disgusting but I do not have to the control to stop.

Ok. But nobody just stops and doesn't feel the need ever again. I'm pretty sure that guy you worked with craved for quite sometime after stopping too.

Also how long you have been smoking is nor very relevant. How long it's been since you stopped effects it more. There is a duration for nicotine to leave your system completely, and an even longer one for your hormones to regulate themselves.

And 8 years isn't that short either.

I personally don't like joints, blunts, or anything that isn't filtered through water. That's one huge advantage that weed smoking has, no one smokes ******* tobacco out of a bong, but lots of people use bongs (or bubblers or whatever the **** else who cares) for weed. The water filters out a lot of the tar and other gross **** you normally inhale when you smoke.

The water in bongs and bubblers, for what i have researched, is principally used to cool the smoke before it reaches your mouth and lungs. The cooler smoke will reduce the damage on your body, especially on your mouth and throat reducing drastically the chances of cancer, caused by the smoke, in these regions.

Exactly. Weed or Tobacco, you're still inhaling **** into your lungs. People who say SMOKING (not eating, etc.) weed is 100% safe just don't understand. Hell, even the guy who smoked Steve-O's pubes was harming his body. It's not just the substance, it's how you take it in.

I've never smoked weed, just cigars.

For me it's the fact that weed makes you high while cigs don't do ****. I recently stopped smoking weed and tobacco and I have to say I have no trouble with tobacco because I just have to remind myself it's garbage and doesn't have a lot of effect on me anyways, while weed is much harder for me because I miss the high. It's like drinking alcohol is bad for your liver but you get drunk so I understand, but drinking another substance that's as bad for your liver as alcohol but doesn't have any effect on you is ******* stupid.

tl;dr I understand smoking weed because it has an obvious effect on you, but I don't understand why I ever started smoking tobacco in the first place! Or why I didn't quit earlier..

Many cigarettes nowadays have additives that make them significantly more toxic than just pure tobacco, but both are still quite bad for you.
Tobacco has been apart of a long term smear campaign since the cancer discovery to try to keep people from it, which is good, but does explain the hate.
With the recent fight for legalization of weed, it has been shown as good overall, while tobacco is still shown as bad, with tobacco companies unable to advertise.
Inhaling anything like that is bad, but so far it has shown that weed does not lead to chronic and long term addiction like nicotine does.
I find it understandable how the connotations have changed, and with many of the groups who fight to legalize it, any reports of it being bad for you are shot down, evidence or no.

well the tobacco that is put in cigarettes has a lot of things added to it that make it addictive and more dangerous to smoke, such as tar and fiberglass. Weed is literally just a part of a plant that you smoke. It's not fantastic for your lungs, I'll admit however it's less harmful because it's natural and there is a reason to smoke it, unlike cigarettes

You see, my great grandpa used to smoke 3 packs a day, that's a very heavy smoking habit. He lived to be 98.
I remember seeing him sitting on the porch both blind and deaf with cigarette butts thrown all around him as leaves in the middle of autumn. He spoke very little, but he had lots of things to say. He was able to hear if you yelled really loud into his ear and every time I shouted he would reply with a huge smile on his face and his big blue eyes wide open even though he couldn't see a thing. His voice was very rough but everything he said sounded so mellow. He was happy. His life made sense and he was just waiting to go.
My great grandma used to live a healthy life. She was physically active, living on a farm - she died from a heart attack when she was 73.

So, my point is - you can die any day. You could die tomorrow from something as simple as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The meaning of life is to die happy. Do whatever makes you happy, friend.
Sorry for the long comment and take care.

I agree, but its a question of how much risk is fun worth. Many things shorten your life or can kill your directly or non-directly. Just a short list:

Fried foods, high sugar foods, going out into the wilderness (includes activities like fishing, camping and hunting), driving fast, having sex (STDs). Hell even going to a movie theater has risks nowadays.

Point being, you cant live your life because theres a danger risk involved because you'll end up doing nothing, ever. Everything should be subject to a risk/benefit analysis. Smoking, especially cigs, probably should fall into the "benefit not worth the risk" range. However, the anti-smoking extremists should lay off the propaganda of "its a pointless, digusting habit." People enjoy it, and we do lots of things we enjoy that carry risks.

Yelling at smokers about how their killing themselves is like yelling at a cattle rancher for killing cows. Im pretty sure they know and don't care, making the activist's yelling the only pointless thing in this equation.

Natural selection is the idea that those most suited to their current environment survive the longest.

So yeah, while technically everything is natural selection, if you get stabbed by a crazed meth-head on the street that's a far greater representation of natural selection than becoming an addict.

There is however a theory that the reason tobacco propaganda exists is the fact that when a smoker quits smoking and then later comes back to smoking - he smokes more than he used to before, which increases profit for the tobacco industry.
Every smoker knows that cigarettes can potentially harm him, I don't see a point of putting pictures of corpses on the packs anyway, it's disgusting.

A friend of mine got diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago. He's not a smoker, he worked in a paint shop for years. Many things cause lung cancer, there's no point on blaming it all on tobacco.

Your mom may be right. I come from a family of doctors who smoke saying that they have had as many smoker lung cancer patients as non-smokers. (Passive smoking is ******** actually.)
I was actually trying to get to the bottom of this topic for years now and I just can't find a good reason for that much anti smoking propaganda except for the theory that when you quit smoking and start smoking again you smoke more than you used to so it increases profit for the companies.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but this seriously makes no sense to me.

My only problem with that is things like PCP causing rampages and violent tendencies, or people driving while on Meth or coke. The more legal things there are, the more people will drive under the influence.

It's one thing to kill yourself with drugs, but far too many drugs influence people in a way that make them dangerous to others.

I'm 19 and I've smoked since I was 13. Don't ******* pick it up. If you justify smoking, you're the one who's never smoked. It's the worst habit you can't afford. The whole "we're all gonna die some day, so I don't care if I die younger" argument is ********, as well. Sure. You don't care about dying younger. It's not just that, though. The amount of pain and suffering you go through just within the first 10 years of smoking is awful. I'm 19 and I regularly get chest pains and have to deal with frequent heart palpitations that cause my heart to actually skip beats.

Do not ******* smoke.

I'll say something because that's just a foolish thing to say. " I know it's not justification, and stated so.

Of course you're not going to get lung cancer from that but the smoke is still unhealthy. also what kind of bond do you create with a stranger you talk to for 20 minutes? do you call them every weekend to meet up and smoke together or invite them to your house to smoke? there might be worse things in the air in some places but smoke doesn't do anything positive for a persons health other than an extremely short feeling of relaxation that you could get from 100 different things

and seriously there's a ton of unhealthy things you're confronted with every day, some smoke in the open air probably is far from the worst

What i dont like at all is the fact that if im outside, walking home from work and someone happens to see me smoking, they feel the need to spew everything theyve learned about cigarettes at me like im going to gasp and burn my pack after realizing there is a warning label on them.
4 times today people have stopped me, to tell me im going to die early because i smoke. People drink, people smoke, let me enjoy what little life i have if im going to die and stop annoying me.
