What's worse is that some people who are BORN in america and speak it as a first language, will still confuse; you're, your, there, their, they're, accept and except, as grown adults.

America actually has no official national language. The majority of schools teach in English because that is the most spoken language.

And because most states have english as their official state language.

They teach you how to write and speak properly in American schools. It's up to the students to pay attention.

I think a big part of it is the whole "reading is for nerds" mindset kids experience in public schools. I'd say less than 10% of the people i know read for pleasure. I'm shocked at how many adults can't read a ******* thing out loud without stuttering mispronunciations.

But I have impeccable English skills when I speak.

While English has come to dominate in the United States, 232 years later it still has not been made the official language for more or less the same reason it wasn’t in 1780. In fact, the American Civil Liberties Union argues that declaring English as the official language of the United States would violate the First Amendment

I live an a middle class white suburb of California (in America), and there are only about 2 or 3 land whales at my entire school (that I've seen). Also, bad grammar has never been a problem. I think a lot of the stereotypes of America derive from lower income areas. Just the 2 cents of a sheltered white kid

i know this is only a bit related, but in my college-level class of thirty people all over eighteen, only three knew the definition of the word "relativity". Most people thought it was used to describe how close one or another family member was in the family tree.

It depends where you place yourself in any country. In areas with nicer crowds, you're more likely to meet better people. Areas with smarter crowds (Let's say like some event) will probably offer people with better grammar.

Also, that's the same way with a lot of places. If I went to Italy Which I plan to do in 2015 and expected everyone to have perfect grammar, I would probably be disappointed. If you learn a new language, the program you use like Rosetta stone will not teach you slang. Cultures form their own slang and most people don't learn perfect grammar when in higher learning.

It's just how it is.
