It's october, better get some more comps out.
Griffin
One of the most famous mythological beings there are. The griffin is a creature with a lion's body, tail and back legs, and an eagle's head, legs (as the front legs), and wings. Because the lion was thought of as the king of the beasts, and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin was the king of all creatures, and thus very popular in things like heraldry, where it represents strenght, leadership, boldness, courage etc. It's most popular in ancient Greece lore and art, though there is evidence of representations from before 3000 BC.
In lore, the griffin is often said to guard treasure and priceless possessions. It's claws had strong medical properties, and it's feathers could restore sight to the blind. Griffins apparently mated for life, and would go the rest of their life alone if their mate dies, making it a symbol of the church's oppostion to remarriage. A griffin could also mate with a mare, resulting in a hippogriff, a creature that was like the griffin, but was a eagle/horse hybrid, instead of eagle/lion. Because it was born from a terrestrial beast and an aerial bird, the hippogriff was seen as a symbol of Jesus. Sculptures of it can be found in some churches.
Scylla
One of 2 creatures from greek mythology that resided opposite one another at a narrow channel in the sea, where avoiding one meant being within range of the other. Scylla was a female monster that lived in some large rocks in this channel, from where she would snatch up people from passing ships and devour them. She was described as having a human upper body, but 12 tentacles instead of legs, and she has a row of bear (or wolf) heads around her waist, who devoured the sailors she caught with her tentacles.
Several different versions exist about how she came to be. 2 of these state that she was a naiad that got tranformed from a potion poured into the waters where she bathed. In the first it was Amphitrite who did it, Poseidon's wife, because Scylla had cought Poseidon's eyes. In the other it was the sorceress Circe, who like Scylla was also in love with Glaucus (another sea god, born mortal).
Charybdis
The other monster from that same narrow channel as Scylla. Charybdis was a creature that lived under a smaller rock tham Scylla lived in, and would come out 3 times a day to swallow large amounts of water, creating whirlpools that could drag down and destroy whole ships, before belching it back out again. Because of this, it was generally better to sail near Scylla, as losing some crew members is better than losing your whole ship. "Between Scylla and Charybdis" is an expression for when one have to choose between 2 dangers.
Charybdis was supposedly the daughter of Poseidon and Gaia, and served Poseidon as a loyal servant. She became the monster with this massive thirst for sea water for helping Poseidon engulf land and islands in water, which he did because of his feud with Zeus. Angry at her, Zeus transformed her.
Other storyes state the Charybdis was just a whirlpool, and not a creature creating whirlpools.

Djinn
A race of magical beings from arabic folklore. The djinn are a spirit people born from smokeless fire (possibly plasma). They lived in a parallel dimension, but could easily travel to ours if they wanted. Normally invisible, they could materialize as any form they wanted to, from human and animal to supernatural beings or entities. Usually thought of as malicious tricksters, they could be either good or bad. They only appear as wish granters in folk tales such as 1001 Nights.
Djinn are featured in the Qur'an. They were created by Allah long before he created humans, and where eaqual to angels in stature, though they were created for the purpose of worshiping Allah just like humans were. When Allah at last created Adam and told the angels to bow to him, the leader of the djinn, Iblis, refused and where cast out of heavan. Iblis (also called Shaytan) has since been Islam's devil figure.

Bakunawa
In Philippine mythology, it was originally 7 moons on the night sky. But then one night, a giant sea dragon called Bakunawa reached up and began devouring them. He managed to eat 6 of them before the moons' creator, Bathala, thought men to bang pots and plates to disturb the dragon with the noise, causing him to retreat. A lunar eclipse is supposedly Bakunawa trying to eat the last moon.
There are multiple stories that tells why Bakunawa wanted to eat the moons, some actually putting some sympathy on the dragon. One such story has it that Bakunawa had a sister, a giant sea turtle, who was killed by islanders when she came to their island to lay eggs. The sea rose as she arrived, and the islanders were afraid she would sink their island.
Another has it that Bakunawa and a village girl fell in love, but when the head of the tribe found out about it, he had their home burned down to ash. In both cases, Bakunawa would eat the moons as an act of revenge. Following the last one, as Bakunawa was about to eat the last moon, he was banished from his home in the sea by Bathala, and lunar eclipses is Bakunawa trying to return to his home and deceased family.
