I'm supposed to be posting a new comp every weekend, but I got cought up in other stuff. Mostly Smite and Hellsing Ultimate with my brother. And yesterday I had stuff to do on my pc. And more Smite. Allways Smite.
Well it is here now. Sorry about the time.

Kraken

Possibly the most famous sea monster. The kraken is a creature from norwegian fishermen's tales, which tells of a creature as large as an island, capable of dragging whole ships down into Davy Jones' locker. While today normally thought of as a giant ocopus, it was originally thought to be something like a giant sea star. Or a crab, that could sink ships by ascending and diving, causing maelstroms as it did.

Some stories tell of how one could actually "fish on the kraken". It was thought to be feeding for a few months, then sleep, and while asleep, it would poop, which atracted more fish for it to eat the next time it woke up. Thus meanwhile, you could fish over it, just be careful when you do it.

Kunekune

A japanese urban legend. The kunekune looks like a white, long, slender paper mannequin, with limbs that constantly wiggle. It mostly appears in fields, and on rare occasion over the sea, but it also appears in cities, were it is pitch black instead of white.

While safe to look at from a distance, should one approach it, one would go insane. And if you actually were to touch it, it would kill you. Several creepy pasta stories tell of people who have met it, usually with a family member in mental hospital as result.

Typhon

The greatest monster in greek mythology. Typhon was the last son of Gaia and Tartarus, born with the purpose of punishing Zeus for defeating the titans. Typhon was described as having a human torso with numerous vipers instead of legs, a hundred dragon heads (or a human one, with sepents as fingers), wings all over his body, and was as tall as the sky itself, his arms reaching east and west. He also had storm powers, making him a storm deity.

He nearly destroyed Olympus all by himself. Only Zeus even dared to fight him. Losing their first match, after Hermes healed him, Zeus fought Typhon again, and this time trapped him under Mount Etna were he remained. Before this though, together with his wife Echidna, Typhon had gained the title of "the father of monsters", Cerberus and the Nemeon Lion being 2 of their children.

Babi Ngepet

In javanese mythology, it was possible to use black magic in order to gain wealth. This was done by becoming a Babi Ngepet, a boar demon. Looking like a normal person during the day, at night this person would dress in black robes and transform into a boar creature. While tranformed, it would scratch against houses in the village, which magically steals all the wealth inside. When it returned home and changed back, all the wealth it stole would be in the robes.

While out on it's nightly walk, it needed another person to guard a candle inside it's house. If the candle is shaking, fading or almost out, it meant the Babi Ngepet was in danger, and needed help from it's loyal servant.

Cthulhu

The iconic being from H.P Lovecraft's work. Cthulhu is one of many poweful cosmic entities, whose existance alone is beyond human comprehension, known as the Great Old Ones. Cthulhu was described as a giant groteque creature, with a human body, large dragon wings on his back, a whole octopus as his head, and with green scaley skin.

He came to earth long ago, along with others, but at one point entered a dreamless sleep in the city R'lyeh, which sank to the bottom of the pacific ocean. Right before this he had telepathically influenced some of the first humans, which lead to the creation of the cults that worship him. All these cults wait for the time when "the stars are right", the time when Cthulhu would awaken and reclaim his rule of our world, in which chaos and madness will be all that is. He may or may not wipe out all of mankind when he awakens, showing his cultists "mercy" by killing them painfree.

Done. Hope you enjoyed. Got any requests for future comp of monsters or the dead? Feel free to share them.
I post a comp every weekend (that's at least what I'm supposed to)
Don't forget to check out the previous comps as well.

Also: While Cthulhu isn't a creature from an actual culture which these comps are about, people requested him, and I'm guessing you don't really care.

The Japanese have way too many god damn horror stories for one tiny-ass country.
User avatar #31 to #7 - grimsho (07/08/2015) [-]
Especially since most of this stuff was before the nukes were dropped, which is usually the go-to answer for "what the **** , Japan?"

That "tiny-ass country" is currently 128 million people.
It is twice the size of the UK, and a third the size of the US.

A few excerpts from The Call of Cthulhu correcting some of your mistaken info. (there will be no TL;DR)
"The figure, which was finally passed slowly from man to man for close and careful study, was between seven and eight inches in height, and of exquisitely artistic workmanship. It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence, and squatted evilly on a rectangular block or pedestal covered with undecipherable characters."
"They worshipped, so they said, the Great Old Ones who lived ages before there were any men, and who came to the young world out of the sky. Those Old Ones were gone now, inside the earth and under the sea; but their dead bodies had told their secrets in dreams to the first men, who formed a cult which had never died. This was that cult, and the prisoners said it had always existed and always would exist, hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway. Some day he would call, when the stars were ready, and the secret cult would always be waiting to liberate him. "
"These Great Old Ones, Castro continued, were not composed altogether of flesh and blood. They had shape - for did not this star-fashioned image prove it? - but that shape was not made of matter. When the stars were right, They could plunge from world to world through the sky; but when the stars were wrong, They could not live. But although They no longer lived, They would never really die. They all lay in stone houses in Their great city of R'lyeh, preserved by the spells of mighty Cthulhu for a glorious surrection when the stars and the earth might once more be ready for Them. But at that time some force from outside must serve to liberate Their bodies. The spells that preserved them intact likewise prevented Them from making an initial move, and They could only lie awake in the dark and think whilst uncounted millions of years rolled by. They knew all that was occurring in the universe, for Their mode of speech was transmitted thought. Even now They talked in Their tombs. When, after infinities of chaos, the first men came, the Great Old Ones spoke to the sensitive among them by moulding their dreams; for only thus could Their language reach the fleshly minds of mammals. "
Then, whispered Castro, those first men formed the cult around tall idols which the Great Ones shewed them; idols brought in dim eras from dark stars. That cult would never die till the stars came right again, and the secret priests would take great Cthulhu from His tomb to revive His subjects and resume His rule of earth. The time would be easy to know, for then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom. Meanwhile the cult, by appropriate rites, must keep alive the memory of those ancient ways and shadow forth the prophecy of their return.
"In the elder time chosen men had talked with the entombed Old Ones in dreams, but then something happened. The great stone city R'lyeh, with its monoliths and sepulchres, had sunk beneath the waves; and the deep waters, full of the one primal mystery through which not even thought can pass, had cut off the spectral intercourse.

Cthulhu may not be a part of an ancient mythology, but he is most certainly part of modern American culture.
