Skinwalker

In native american stories they believed some witches, evil priests, had the ability to turn into an animal of their choosing. Or something more in the style of a werewolf, an animal with some human characteristics. These witches were known as Skinwalkers.

They were greatly feared, as to become one, one had to commit an act that destroys one humanity, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in witchery. Murder, necrophilia and incest, are examples of such acts. They also had other powers, such as the ability to drain energy and power from a person's fear, steal your face, mind reading, or if you make eyecontact with one, he/she can absorb him/herself into your body.

Siren

A famous creature from greek mythology, the sirens were a group of female creatures that lived on some rocky islands in the sea, known for their seductive singing. There were hardly any man that could resist the call of their song, luring him towards them, and his death. Exactly how they died though, varies. Supposedly the song itself could kill you, as "the end of their song is death".

Despite common believe, the sirens were not fish-woman hybrids like mermaids, but rather bird-woman hybrids, and not allways beautiful. Both Sirens and Mermaids fall under the category of Undine however, a term that refers to female water spirits.

The Jersey Devil

The Jersey Devil is a legendary creature that supposedly inhabits the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. It is a demon most often described as a kangaroo-like creature, with the head of a goat, a forked tail, hooves, and large bat wings. It also had a "blood-curdling scream".

The origin of it is supposedly a witch known as Mother Leeds. She had 12 children, but one day expected a 13th, who's father was the devil himself. He was born normal, but quickly turned into a creature as described above, killed the midwife, then flew away into the pines were it still resides.
Source of pic is a movie called "The Barrens" from 2012. Fairly good, but it got flaws.

Redcap

Found in tales around the border between Scotland and England. The Redcap were small gnome like creatures that looked like sturdy old men with taloned hands, red eyes, wore iron boots, carried pikestaffs, and had hats colored red from the blood of people they had killed for this exact purpose. They had to recolor their hats regularly, for if the color faded away, they would die.

They typically resided in old castles and ruins, preferably in places were grusome acts had taken place. They were also really fast, running from one was apparently impossible. Religious objects can save you though.

Jorōgumo

Old japanese stories state that when a spider turns 400 years old, it gains magical powers, and a hunger for human flesh. The Jorōgumo is a spider that takes on the form of a beautiful woman, enchanted men by playing her biwa (a type of lute), and while they were distracted, she would tie them up in her web without them noticing before it's to late, and then eat them.

They could reside anywere, but a particularly famous legend tells of one living in a waterfall. Besides shapeshifting abilities, It also had the power to control other, lesser spiders, and even supernatural spiders that breath fire, whom the Jorōgumo used to burn down the houses of people who grew suspicious of them.

STORY TIME!
My friend is from New Mexico, and heard stories from the natives about Skinwalkers.
In reality, it's not just witches or priests but a skinwalker could be disguised as anyone(Because they can steal faces). And they were attracted to children because of their innocence. Also another fact is that if you make eye contact, you freeze with fear and they can absorb into your body.

A man had to search for food but realized the sun was soon setting. He had two small children, their mother died during childbirth. The father told the older daughter to look after her little brother while he went to look for food. He told the little girl that she needed to keep the door shut and under no circumstances could they light a fire after the sun set, because the light would attract a skinwalker. Soon after the father left, the children grew hungry. Hours passed and the sun set; but the little boy grew hungry. Once he started crying, the little girl couldn't take it anymore. Ignoring her fathers words she lit a small dismal fire to boil some water to make paste. She thought that if she was quick and quiet, she would bear no consequence. Her father would show up in the morning and everything would be fine. Until she heard a noise the roof. Being native, they lived in a squat thatch hut with a circle in the roof for smoke. Fear struck the girl and forced her to panic. She quickly dosed the fire with the boiling water. Grabbing the little boy she ushered him under the bed and instructed him to make not a single sound till morning. As soon and his sister left, he heard a loud thud and then silence. He did as his sister asked, and waited until morning. His father arrived home shortly after only to find his daughter missing. Furious at the skinwalkers and mournful over his daughter, the man rushed to his best friends house to get help and find his daughter. He rushed into the friends' house only to see 10 bodies sitting on a high shelf, all dead, and of those 10, his daughter.

Witcher 3 downgrades graphics presumably to conserve performance. CD Projekt RED are dicks for doing what pretty much every company's marketing departments do.

Fallout 4 shows actual in-engine footage in the trailer. People complain it looks like **** .

I'm not saying the same people complained about both these things, you just can't please everyone. Publisher/developers just have to make a choice, they either make amazing demos and trailers to try and sell the game, or they just have to risk it and hope the rest of the game is good enough/has a large enough fanbase to sell for itself.
User avatar #131 to #95 - derein (06/21/2015) [-]
CD Projekt RED is a good company. Always doing stuff for their fans. Always making sure their game is great before releasing it. It's when assholes decided to pirate Witcher 2 from a company that consistently shows it cares for its product and its fans they decided to make playing it on consoles less intensive for those system. Normally I don't get so butthurt over pirating games, but CD Projekt RED is just too good to pirate from.

You are helping me write the coolest ******* D&D campaign right now.
Thanks, lordsepulchure.
#18 to #17 - truesmokewolf (06/21/2015) [-]
I'm actually writing two.
One of which I'm using to buff out my own classes and stats system to be more suitable for my personal needs, incorporating styles/motifs/locations and possibly characters/events from Fire Emblem/Game of Thrones.

The other is my magnum opus, where the party's final boss is the DM. Throughout the campaign, they'll acquire artifacts and blessings from lesser deities (myself technically and meta-wise being the true god of that existence) and accumulate them. I intend to give them access to a spell (only 1 person can use it) that if their roll succeeds, they get to re-write something that just happened. Say I swing my scythe at them and cleave one of them clean in two, this one could (on a successful roll) rewrite the event so that the attack was effectively countered, dealing damage to me instead. But it's going to be a massive spell requiring a ******* of mana.

What do you think?

Post the results sometime, sounds interesting.
User avatar #199 to #62 - truesmokewolf (06/22/2015) [-]
I might just do that. I'm short on money, but I have ideas for saving time. It won't exactly be D&D, I'll likely be using custom mats and pieces because it's more work, but just cheaper in general and more fun. Are you familiar with the Fire Emblem: Awakening storyline? >>#47
User avatar #205 to #199 - lordsepulchure [OP](06/22/2015) [-]
No I'm not.

**** . Forgot my picture.

For size reference, that's a giant tower/temple where thousands of Grimleal (worshippers of the Fell Dragon) amassed to become part of the feast so he could be resurrected.
User avatar #206 to #205 - truesmokewolf (06/22/2015) [-]
There's an alternate dimension where the protagonists fail, their children travel back in time from that alternate future to change the course of events so that Grima, the Fell Dragon (pic related), is not revived. In my campaign, the players are in the alternate future where Grima is resurrected at full power and begins destroying the world. Their paths cross with the protagonists briefly, but for the most part they do their own thing.

Grima has powerful undead minions known as "Risen" that attack in hordes, so it'll be easy to come up with enemies to fight. As well as bandits, etc.

Ainsley

Ainsley is a creature native to the UK, specifically sighted on British soil. He is said to have came from a woman, but his true origin is a well-disguised mystery. Ainsley is said to kidnap innocent people who use too little oil, or those who do not give their meats' a good ol' rub. What he does with his victims is unknown, some say he cooks them, others say he makes them watch him cook a variety of other harmless foods.

I got a few good ones to throw you too.

Changeling - some magical creatures like trolls, pixies or other things like that snatched babies and put a changeling or themselves in their place. pretty ****** up stuff, here is a good reason for you to burn your baby eh?
Surma - guards the gates of the afterlife "tuonela" in the Kalevala mythology. It is a terrible beast that looks like a dog with a snakes tail, and a stare could freeze you to stone. Surma also means kill, or at least it's a synonym for it.
Nachtkrapp - raven like creature that hunted children after dark and tore them limb by limb and ate them. in some versions it snatched kids in his bag. handy creature to get kids come home early eh?
Nachzehrer - a vampire/ghoul that devours it's own kin. it can kill you with the noise of the church bells and if you make contact with it's shadow you're dead.
Ichneumon - these furry little ferrets were the only thing that could kill a dragon. they were very clever and killed them by going inside the dragon and.. stuff? cute little dragon slayers <3
Shellycoat - they have shellkind of things in their back and they are not exactly evil. they may give false directions to travellers... pretty mean so uh yeah.
Louhi - the witch, or the queen, who ruled the northern lands. she could take many forms and she was really sly and evil. her daughter was beautiful and she made men do different deeds for the hand of her daughter and she wanted to get her hands on the magical item that created gold from nothing "sampo".
Ajatar - Aitvaras or babylonian Tiamat closely resemble her. She is the devil of the woods and the mother of the devil. she takes the form of a snake or a dragon and she spreads illnesses. she breastfeeds serpents, which is pretty ******* gross metal if you ask me.
Etiäinen - very much like a doppelganger or a Vardøger, except these spirits are very neutral and they often represent beings possible future doings. everything has an etiäinen. sometimes you can hear the door come when it's not supposed to yet for example or you may meet your loved one coming home and doing things, only to witness them coming a little bit later instead. they are the spirits that go do things before you. these things are not necessarily monsters though...
Otso - also called Ohto, Kontio and Honeypaws. This was basically the unnamed spirit of a bear that was the spirit of the forest. They were believed to be relatives, brothers. I don't know if this qualifies as a "monster" but I was warned as a kid to never make a fool out of the name. kinda interesting imo.
Mare Vette, she sits on people and gives them nigtmares
Pesta - illness and death. she is an old lady that goes from door ro door with a broom and a rake. if she only has a broom the death in inevitable. she was created when black death was around in scandinavia.
Draugen - man who died at sea, a ghost that shows himself in the form ofa gigantic seaweed giant. he drowns people and his scream is horrible.
Nuppeppo - an animated lump of flesh.
Makura-Gaeshi - these bad boys... move pillows. oh and they also steal souls and put sand in your eyes but mainly they steal pillows. pure evil.
Hiisi - kinda like a troll or a giant. these fellas apparently shaped the landscapes and made these weird holes on the ground called "hiidenkirnu".
Nakki - kinda like sirens, but they are not necessarily pretty. They can be called Näkki, Neck, Nixe, Näck and they were seacreatures in many countries and they took different forms. they often lured children to the water and drowned them, apparently in the olden times parents drowned their unwanted children and blamed Näkki for it.
Iku-turso - kinda like kraken. a mean fella that could grow dragon wings too.

I know that some of these weren't really monsters. sorry.
