"Organic Turkey"

A vegetarian turkey.
#16 to #4 - anon (12/24/2015) [-]
That would be soy/tofu. Which may or may not be organic.

I think he meant that the turkey was a vegetarian.

the turkey probably isnt fed fillers and growth hormones

huge difference between a sams club turkey and a local farm turkey, here in usa

like chicken in rural places in europe tastes uncomparable to the **** they offer here. Chicken here tastes like hot wet toilet paper.

Its supposed to be a turkey that is raised free range and without supplements and chemicals. Basically its fed an actual diet, has more than enough room to move around, and its doesnt have drugs and **** shove up its ass all while being outside.

The issue is, just because its organic doenst mean that is actually is, because FDA standards are completely and utterly ****** . Like how free ranged cattle, their fat is tinted yellow. But corn fed cattle it stark white, yet FDA says that stark white fat is the best fat.
#78 to #41 - anon (12/25/2015) [-]
Organic has absolutely nothing to do with being free range and they can still use all the drugs they please just so long as they aren't synthetic. And often organic chemicals are more dangerous than synthetic ones. But hey the organic scam market couldn't stay alive without the blissfully ignorant like you so keep on keeping on.

excessive use of antibiotics

Heaven for bid a turkey, whom is raised in a confined place with thousands of other turkeys, doesn't die of disease.
#38 to #34 - bloodoffear (12/25/2015) [-]
Except that thanks to the ubiquitous use of antibiotics throughout the lifespan of every single livestock animal, for the sole purpose of them growing larger as a side effect is the reason that we are seeing more and more bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, even powerful last line of defense antibiotics. Once strains resistant to every known antibiotic become widespread modern medicine will revert back to the era seen before penicillin was discovered. Enjoy dieing from basic **** like E. Coli.
User avatar #42 to #34 - ChewyConor (12/25/2015) [-]
Correct use of antibiotics: when they get sick, give them antibiotics so they don't die.

Excessive use of antibiotics: give them a constant stream of antibiotics their whole life so that they don't ever get sick.
#46 to #42 - swagbot (12/25/2015) [-]
... so that they don't ever get sick, and so that they spontaneous gain saleable weight, through a variety of unnatural bodily mechanisms.

Peep Show. British comedy which I somehow got into watching as an American while searching the internet for softcore porn. After watching a few minutes I was hooked. Legitimately one of the funniest shows ever. If you haven't seen it check it out.

I like That Mitchell and Webb Look, but I much prefer Peep Show. I like a comedy that has a long form storyline and intrinsic comedy that builds due to the relationship of the characters, rather than joke sketch/joke sketch/joke sketch.

A little insight into what organic, antibiotic free meat is.

Animals used for meat are already required to be free of antibiotics up to a certain date before it is processed to be sure that there are no longer antibiotics etc etc in it when humans eat it. The "omg that meat is full of hormones and antibiotics" is vegan/anti-agriculture propaganda that has perpetuated when it is no longer a concern. Whether they took some at all during their life doesn't matter but it has to be sure that it has cycled out of their body before slaughter.
Ergo all we meat eat is already antibiotic free.

What antibiotic free meat translates to is that the animal you are eating never received medications throughout its life before it was killed. The animal could have died of pneumonia or some other infection or disease when it was sent to slaughter because god forbid it had antibiotics to insure it had a healthy life before you ate it.
This is what you pay for when you buy food or eat at an establishment that advertises antibiotic free meat and charge you three times as much for it.

If you want to live an organic life by all means it's your right. But then if your kid gets the flu or an ear infection then hand them some tissues and tell them to suck it up because medications aren't organic and it goes against your lifestyle.

Additive hormones have also been banned for the past 50 years. The reason chickens are bigger than they were back then is selective breeding for a bigger bird, not because they were injected with steroids.

Half of my family has been in agriculture for many generations.
Support local farmers before there are none left.

Lots of info has been gathered on this site.

#14 to #12 - anon (12/24/2015) [-]

#33 to #12 - jujuface (12/25/2015) [-]
You realize there are still FDA regulations in place that outlaw the sale of meat that is tainted with harmful bacteria (read: those that cause all the diseases you just mentioned), right? That's one of the reasons the organic meat costs so much more. Either the animal dies prematurely because of a disease that antibiotics could have prevented, and/or the carcass is infected and has to be thrown out.
Organic also means free of pesticides though. That may mostly apply to plant life, but I think it's relevant to mention that any non organic food you eat may have been sprayed with pesticides. I eat non organic all day, but that's mostly because I'm poor. Let's not pretend like there are no benefits to organic foods.
User avatar #97 to #33 - crypticmerle ONLINE (12/25/2015) [-]
You're right about the pesticide free thing, and if people want to eat organic veggies for that reason I don't blame them. Or they can get them from a source that they know doesn't use pesticides (farmers markets, natural grocers, etc). It's not always easy or cheap of course, but it's all personal choice.
Problem is also that people are afraid of GMOs for the same reason they are afraid of antibiotics. They don't understand them so they don't want to eat them. If people ate GMO crops that were designed to be resistant to the bugs destroying their yields but still healthy to eat then we wouldn't need pesticides. But GMOs are evil therefore if companies want to be GMO free to cater to this growing non-GMO fad then they have to protect their crops somehow.
People need to find a balance, and educate themselves on agriculture. Where are we going to get our food from if we alienate the people trying to grow/raise it for us?
#47 to #12 - swagbot (12/25/2015) [-]
I think a lot of what you said is false or half-truth, but this is gold:

"Support local farmers before there are none left."

I don't offer an opinion intending to mislead people. I will encourage you to do your own research if you don't believe me what I say has merit.

But if the only thing people take away from everything I said is that one sentence you quoted then I have done a service.
Thanks

Repeated, unnecessary use of antibiotics on livestock at a massive (read: industrial) scale slowly but surely creates bacteria that are incredibly resistant to conventional antibiotics. While the usage of antibiotics on bovine livestock is the biggest problem, fowl also cause this problem.
Careful and sparing usage of antibiotics when animals are sick is perfectly fine, probably even necessary, but many "industrial" farms put large quantities of antibiotics into the animals' regular feed. This gives the usage of antibiotics on livestock a bad reputation.
User avatar #96 to #30 - crypticmerle ONLINE (12/25/2015) [-]
Right. I think what it mainly comes down to is knowing where your food comes from versus trying to cut out all of the antibiotics etc all together out of blind fear.
You don't have to go organic to avoid supporting factory farms and excessive use of antibiotics, but you do have to research. But most people are too lazy to do so and are just comfortable going with something that tells them it's free of what they are told are bad. It's the same thing that caused the anti-vaccine thing. If people are told that the red berries will poison them then they will eat blueberries for the rest of their lives.
#18 to #12 - thefluf (12/25/2015) [-]
Actually antibiotics were use to increase the mass of the animals even tho there was no risk of any infections.
User avatar #19 to #18 - crypticmerle ONLINE (12/25/2015) [-]
Legit question, I don't claim to have a medical or chemistry background but how exactly do antibiotics increase mass?
#39 to #19 - bloodoffear (12/25/2015) [-]
We don't know for sure. Bacteria in the GI tract consume some of our intake calories and metabolize them to sustain their own life processes; I don't know if the scale is large enough to affect mass to the degree that anti-biotics do though. Most answers on the topic are speculative, but this isn't all that uncommon as medicine is not always mechanistically understood. We learn new things about why tylenol kills pain everyday.
#21 to #18 - justtocomment (12/25/2015) [-]
How, and please understand I'm really asking, the **** do antibiotics increase mass? Hormones, yes. Antibiotics? How?

Actually just googled and you are correct on one of their classic uses.
Regardless of the reasoning behind why antibiotics were administered via feed, or as a medication antibiotic free is antibiotic free. And the animals are already tested and documented before they end up in your cheeseburger. And antibiotic free doesn't allow the animal access to antibiotics even when they do need them because then they couldn't be used as such as meat labelled antibiotic free.

What it comes down to is - no one is gonna die or grow a third nipple cause they ate meat that wasn't antibiotic free.
