Children are violent because they haven't developed an empathy for others yet. They don't realize the pain they're causing others, because they don't feel the pain themselves. The media isn't the cause of all of society's problems, shocking, I know.

Well, you're disagreeing to something that's related to empathy.
So in a sense, you're saying no to what you yourself are stating.
As you said, empathy is learned.
One way in which children can learn that is through media.
Though media is not all of society's problems, it can be a contributing factor.
Just like the contributing factor of parenthood (though this would be the primary factor in how a child develops). You need a balance of everything.
If a child views super heroes being shot with guns and they are only stun or knock over...then the child does not develop the idea that guns hurt and/or kill.
However, that's not to say children should just be allowed to watch all the gore they can,
Just watching plain gore can just cause children to be scarred deeply, connect entertainment with gore, or want to try things depicted in gore films/shows.
This is where parenthood steps in to teach the children.
