Soldiers belong to terrestrial armies, marines to amphibious military branches. There is a lot of overlap, but soldier isn't a verb. The infantry skills may carry over, but then a lot of the same tactics are used by USAF combat controllers, pararescuemen, and TACP, and Navy SEALs have to learn infantry skills.

It's a title that corresponds to branch, that's it.
User avatar #121 to #118 - elcreepo
Reply -16 123456789123345869

Actually no

Marines are first in, marines are better trained, higher ranking... let's just say you kick ******* ass as a marine whereas a private firstclass infantry is only good for getting mowed down and occasionally dropping a few ************* in the process

If war is like chess infantry soldiers are pawns and marines are knights.
User avatar #124 to #121 - Kanoah
Reply +31 123456789123345869
(08/28/2014) [-]
Actually, yeah.
Soldier is a generalized term, Marine is a title. Marines are soldiers, because they do what a soldier does. Chess infantry are soldiers, and so are the knights. The knights, however, are a higher class. They are still soldiers. If you're talking about any warfighter, who picks up a gun and fights for whatever nation, he's a ******* soldier.
Now, if you want to differentiate between the Marines and the Army, then one would be a soldier in the Marine Corps, hence, a Marine.

I don't think you're familiar with the rank structuring of the military

An E-3 in my branch (Air Force) and an E-3 in the Marines are the same thing, just different training, job title, etc. There is no different rank other then increasing or decreasing order

To those curious as to why he might get mad at being called a "soldier" is because each branch's forces are called something different.

Army - Soldier
Marines - Marine
Navy - Sailors
Airforce - Airman

This would imply OP is any of the other three, more than likely a Marine.
Hope this helped.

they make terrorists faster than they can kill them.

It's called dehumanizing. People won't easly kill other people, but when you tell them the enemy is not human it get easier. Plus if they told that kid that the soldier they are sending this stuff to is a invader and murderer, they couldn't trigger him with "support the troops" later in life.

I'm not the one that down-voted you, but why can't it be as simple as a seven-year old kid knows a guy's at war, that he has the probability of being shot, and if a fish can protect her from monsters, why can't it protect a soldier from getting shot? I really don't think anyone equated the terrorist or whomever the hell else to monsters.

monsters do things that are monstrous. Monstrous is defined as (of a person or an action) inhumanly or outrageously evil or wrong. Suicide bombing civilians fits this description, and as such an argument could be made that they are fighting monsters.

Now, based on the civilian casualties in, say, the Iraq war, an argument could be made that the American soldiers were also monsters. So pick your poison.

The difference would be the intent. America tried very hard to minimalize casualties, though their efforts weren't entirely successful. The terrorists, on the other hand, wanted civilian casualties more so than actually defeating or wounding the enemy. It's part of why they went for the World Trade Center, killing almost entirely innocent civilians, rather than going for a military complex. It's also why ISIS had no problem attempting to kill 40000 civilians a few weeks back.

I don't think I would want to explain to my 7 year old kid what terrorists are and what they do. Better to just leave it at monsters. They are monstrous men who kill their own countrymen because of whatever their cause. They have no regard for human life, not for others, their own, or even their children.

Or maybe since 7 is way too young to grasp the concept of what's happening there and all over the world, her parents just told her that the soldier is away from home fighting actual (in a 7 y/o's perspective) monsters.

Just because her young mind sees monsters as a representative of bad things/people doesn't mean her parents are necessarily telling her that the brown people ARE monsters.

You try explaining war to a seven year old girl without scarring her for life, especially one whose family is taking part in an Adopt a Soldier program, It's not about dehumanizing the enemy it's probably how her parents/teacher/whatever explained war to her in a way she can comprehend without, you know, explaining mass death and complex socio-political situations to a ******* seven year old girl

I'd at least try to explain to her why wars are fought, and that neither side is good or evil instead of brainwashing her into thinking that the enemy are sub human monsters who need to be exterminated, especially when you're fighting an offensive war. That's how racists are born, that's how hitler succeded. But you can't really expect americans to constantly fight off the onslaught of propaganda thrown into their faces every day. It's easy to see if you look at it from the outside though.

Trust me, the Taliban are monsters. I would enter villages burned to the ground, little girls and boys raped and beheaded, the wives taken as their own, and the fathers forced to bury IED's on the nearest route.

American soldiers have committed some atrocities in Afghanistan don't get me wrong. But that is not the policy nor the condoned actions and these people are prosecuted under full actions of UCMJ. The Taliban celebrate their brutality by bombing markets and sing Allah Ackbar.

a child won't know the difference between "taliban" and "brown people" though.

What do you expect? They aren't aware of culture/national/political identity. Note that in the child's letter, she did not say Afghans. She did not specify brown people. She specified monsters and bad people.

it's better to brainwash her to "support our troops". So politicians could use this trigger for their own profit.
