"It's not like she'll **** me for $40 anyway" - you're right. But she will smile at you, and allow you to attempt conversation in a way that indicates romantic or sexual intent. And without saying anything more than "here, let me get that for you", the ground is set that (A) you're a nice guy (B) you're not so broke that $40 bucks is unreasonable to spend on a whim (C) you're willing to provide and (D) you're confident enough to approach attractive women.
