I normally hate errant frames at the ends of gifs, but the one at the end of this one is actually extremely helpful for finding the episode this came from(Space Ace).

I play yugioh and cardfight vanguard. If someone was able to use this technique then they can literally stack the deck...until the opponent cuts the deck
User avatar #30 to #26 - toxicovrtake (09/19/2015) [-]
Well I'm sure if they were as good as this guy, I'm sure they could anticipate a deck cut.
I'm sure they could even anticipate the thing my friends do after a cut during MTG where we take the top card, show it to them, and go 'You think I was going to let you have this dope ass card?" Then put it at the bottom.
User avatar #13 - kitsunesai (09/19/2015) [-]
Half of the things he said he was doing and how he does it is not true.
It's all sleight of hand, he never actually lets the aces leave his control and really he has the routine all planned out with the deck in a certain order then uses a bunch of different false shuffles and cuts.
User avatar #15 to #13 - Shramin (09/19/2015) [-]
Proof?
User avatar #16 to #13 - iqequalzero ONLINE (09/19/2015) [-]
The never leaving his control, I agree with, but I very much doubt he had the deck in a certain order.
#38 to #16 - imfunnyokay (09/19/2015) [-]

Well he did; Not the whole deck but a portion of the deck was for the gin/rummy and black jack part of the act.

The first "overhand" shuffle he simply takes a few cards and places them on the bottom. Next he does a faro shuffle which, if done perfectly (and it doesn't take a whole lot of practice to be consistent at doing it perfectly) only puts one card in between the rest of the cards (so if you want to deal a ten and an ace to yourself: put the ten and the ace on top and then do a faro shuffle and now because there's one card in between them you can deal a card to the other person, then the ten to yourself, a card to the other person and then the ace to yourself.... without any tricky moves because it's already set up).

As for the table shuffles, you can see him pause and then push a huuuuge chunk of cards into the other pack, effectively not really shuffling at all.

Most importantly: because he only needs a portion of the deck to be in a certain order, he can shuffle the part of the cards that doesn't need to be controlled to give a better feeling to the spectator that the cards were actually shuffled.

tl;dr kitsunesai is correct but gets a red thumb for trying to be a showoff for "knowing how he does it"

inb4 you're showing off too.

You right.
User avatar #40 to #38 - kitsunesai (09/19/2015) [-]
Well, I'm not really trying to show off. It's just that these routines annoy me with how the person explains that they're doing it. I understand why they explain it the way they do, that's part of the act and it's part of the wonder for the viewers. For me personally, it's just annoying because I know it's not true.

Also, awesome, I've been doing magic for 7 years now
#41 to #40 - imfunnyokay (09/20/2015) [-]
I feel you. I'm not really a fan of any Ricky Jay's magic because he seems too arrogant in doing it. He doesn't create a magical moment. Instead he kind of shows off and i don't agree with that. His card throwing on the other hand is amazing. I wish I could throw that well.

Anyway, I see where you're coming from but it's difficult not to tell little white lies when doing any trick. ACR for example... "I'm going to put the card in the middle and I snap my fingers... now it's up top". There's a lie in there for sure. Also, I understand he takes it a little bit farther by blatantly saying the exact opposite of the truth but that's just Ricky Jay. I don't really like it either :/

That's awesome! I hope you keep doing it for a long time.
User avatar #42 to #41 - kitsunesai (09/20/2015) [-]
Right? I mean yeah, it is really cool, and he's very talented for sure. I also have to completely agree on that card throwing, it is amazing!
Either way, I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way, my favorite part of most performances have to be the "magical moment" mainly because the response you can get from the viewers, and when you can tell that they're filled with amazement and wonder
