Is Liberal becoming a dirty word in America like socialism now?

yup and its ******* annoying, god forbid you arent a god forbid you are a little to the right
#132 to #33 - gerfox (01/08/2016) [-]
Its kinda sad if you ask me. People are entitled to their own opinions, even though they are wrong. In many European countries neo-nazi parties are outlawed for instance. I think that is bad because, even though I don't condone their views and policies, they have the right to express their opinions however they'd like. And national socialism, as an idea, and without the genocidal war mongering element, isnt really a bad idea (the purpose of the state is to give everyone of your own people, first and foremost, an equal chance to succeed or become whatever you want to, and to do everything in your power to make sure that it is so).

In the US, socialism - and all words with socialism in it, has been greatly frowned upon - and been strongly linked with communism - even though for instance social democracy and communism are about as close as a nazi and a liberal. I like how Bernie Sanders suddenly has grown popular though, even though he says what he says about socialism. Maybe the American people are willing to try something new?

It is the Year 2016,
humanity has progressed further than ever before.
With the invention of the internet having taken less than one hundred years ago,
its society has both prospered and fallen in various areas. Mankind has begun to question more than ever about who to trust, who is right, what is right, and why it is right to do it.

Despite all of this, mankind has achieved incredible feats of space exploration,
medical science, and engineering precise enough to play with the fabric of an atom.
Almost every family has a recreational flying robot in their home, and technology has advanced so quickly that even their own government is unable to catch up.

With such powerful storage devices as lithium polymers and conductors suchas graphene, who knows what bizarre kinds of advances await in the future?

Tune in to next week's episode of"1950's Peek Into the Future", and find out!

You're all hypocrites. "It's current year" is not very different from "get with the times", or "in this day and age". We all know the meaning behind it is a focus on progression. Focusing on trivial things and repeating stuff like apes makes you just as bad, if not worse, than the people you mock.

While bringing up time as an argument is stupid, it's mostly brought up to empathize a point, nothing more.
User avatar #26 to #20 - madb (01/07/2016) [-]
i have used this site for almost a year now and i usualy allways look trough almost the entire first page of the coment section if i find a picture interesting. i have litarely never seen anyone here say "get with the times"

User avatar #30 to #26 - haroldsaxon (01/07/2016) [-]
Nor have I. However, it is a well known term most people don't complain about. My complaint is how people chose to ignore every argument and focus on trivial things, how both sides repeat buzzword after buzzword, refusing to acknowledge own mistakes or others valid points.

My point was not that you were hypocrites for mocking one word, while using an alteration yourselves, but rather the bashing of moot points.
#67 to #30 - lujan (01/07/2016) [-]
"Get with the times" is used in movies and stuff as a parody phrase. They are mocking the idea that time can change morality or integrity. Like in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, George Carlin says he's going to give any truck driver a blowjob to give him a ride, and Jay says he's not gay so he won't do that and he's not willing to stoop to that level to hitch a ride, and then George Carlin replies something along the lines of, "Gay, straight, it's all the same. Get with the times. It's the new millennium." (The movie came out in 2001 I think). Using the year as a reason to do or not do something makes no sense.
#22 to #20 - anon (01/07/2016) [-]
How are we hypocrites? People dislike "Its the current year" for the same reason they dislike "get with the times" and "it is how it is".

Its a buzzword of arguments.
User avatar #28 to #22 - haroldsaxon (01/07/2016) [-]
It's not even an argument.
#74 to #28 - anon (01/07/2016) [-]
that's the point, people use it like it is
User avatar #25 to #20 - TheHutchie (01/07/2016) [-]
I'm not American, so to me, words like "liberal" are just buzzwords to the same effect, but I'll throw in my thoughts anyway.

To me, the notion of a certain thing being encouraged simply due to what era of history we're sitting in is ridiculous. I think that when people use these expressions, they should instead be emphasising how ways of thinking should be left behind in time rather than how new ones should be encouraged now. There's no such thing as progress without comparison to the past, otherwise what would we be progressing from?
User avatar #27 to #25 - haroldsaxon (01/07/2016) [-]
That is the implications of the "current year" saying. Though it is silly, it does exactly what you wished for, emphasizing that old ways of thinking should be left behind.
User avatar #29 to #27 - TheHutchie (01/07/2016) [-]
I don't believe it does, sir, unless the person saying it actually makes a real comparison. It shouldn't be made about the numbers 2016 and 1926, for example - it should be directly said that women can vote now and they couldn't then.
User avatar #31 to #29 - haroldsaxon (01/07/2016) [-]
As I've stated, numerous times, "current year" is no more then emphasis, something you add after pointing out something you perceived as wrong which was common before, but not now. Like women voting. An example could be: "Party [x] wants to remove women's right to vote. C'mon people it's [current year]." While I dislike the way this is worded, all the implications are there, and ignoring those would just be silly and a huge step back. I imagine using terms like these is mostly to rail people up with you, likely through media, but I digress.

If you'd say "modern art is good because it's modern", or "I don't like this because it was better before", then I'd agree that would be problematic.

Just for clarity. My personal problem, and reason for posting, is that people avoid the actual points in arguments, and focus on something else. Both* sides does this. I don't mind the satire of "current year", though I might have implied it with bad wording, the problem is when people dismiss a possibly legit argument just because of those words. Humor is ok, but the use in "serious" discussion is not.

If we were brave enough to admit our own faults, and others strengths, then we could improve much faster.

* There aren't two black and white sides. It's more like 50 shades of grey.
User avatar #32 to #31 - TheHutchie (01/07/2016) [-]
I see where you're coming from, and of course you're right. I still think that if I were to argue the same points, I'd probably avoid saying "it's 2016!" all out. Much better to argue that improving our society should be done on its own merits and to just forget that the time we live in is even a factor, when applicable anyway.
#76 - daniboyi (01/07/2016) [-]

From all the things I hear about American politics, it sounds to me like the american government is pure **** no matter what way you look at it.

The Problems with First Past the Post Voting Explained I think this video does a good job of explaining why the American Two-Party system makes it nearly impossible for third parties to win.
User avatar #97 to #93 - jouten (01/07/2016) [-]
Is that really how it works in America? In germany you need at least 50% of the people's votes to reign, so it makes it basically impossible for a single party to rule, so they need to form coalitions to govern.
One time that even went to the poit were Schröder thought he could still covern although he didn't get the majority of votes, because he didn't believe Merkel and Liberals would be able to coaliate.
User avatar #103 to #97 - garykn (01/07/2016) [-]
Well in the States, we really only have the two parties. Sure there are other smaller parties, but they're mostly just jokes that don't have any representation in our government anyways. If you're a liberal, you're a democrat. If you're a conservative, you're a republican.
User avatar #110 to #103 - jouten (01/07/2016) [-]
So there's no way coalitions can form in the US? Like if liberals got 18%, Democrats 37% and Republicans 45%, the Liberals and Democrats can't make a coalition and form the rightful 55% vote government?
User avatar #113 to #110 - garykn (01/07/2016) [-]
The liberals are the democrats. It's not that you have liberals, conservatives, republicans, and democrats. If you lean liberal on the political scale then you are a democrat. If you lean conservative on the political scale then you are a republican. There's no need for democrats to form a coalition with liberals because all of the liberals (<--Not a political party) are already democrats (<--A political party).
