Black women, and black people in general were never seen as animals. Ever. They were seen as a less advanced form of human, much like native americans, asians, jews, inuits, slavs, ugrians, caucasians, aboriginals and literally every other race that has existed alongside any empire made up predominantly of a different "race" of humans(the same thing goes for an awful lot of nationalities, like how a lot of Americans see Mexicans as lesser humans, or how Koreans see Japanese as lesser humans, or how the Danish are objectively worse than the Swedes in every way). The only one i can really think of that can be said to have gotten away from this was proto-inuits, as died off before any other race managed to get enough of their **** together to actually see them as lesser humans.
Likewise, any milk is better than none, even a cows milk will do if the mother fails to produce. It's easier for fatter women to sustain their milk production, and being slim was popular with the upper classes at the time. And lastly there is a decent chance that what we are seeing there is a couple of high-yellow children, which USUALLY referred to half black half Irish children, but any child born to a black woman would count, these were considered worthy of breeding for for a time, before the practice was banned. it was worth doing as a black slave cost about one fifth as much as a high-yellow one, and a white one cost about twice what a high-yellow slave would cost.
Oh, and everything black women who raised white babies knew about domestic duties they learned from white folks to begin with, with some exceptions such as milking cows, picking edible plants and how to make a fire(probably bank it too). Hell, considering Africans still used clay bowls and rocks to boil water, even something as basic as boiling water using metal implements would have been too advanced for an African of the time, not to mention the issue that Africans never figured out the correlation between dysentery and dirty water, so even fetching water had to be thought.

women *ladies of the house* were trained in house management, similar to business to ensure the staff done her jobs, when it became cheaper to use machines the staff were replaced and the skills often lost and the lady made redundant, so came a wave of educating girls to cook and sew
