Actually it was never disclosed in the books what race Hermione was, and since she is portrayed as a girl struggling with oppression (mudblood and that), it isn't too weird to imagine J.R writing her as a black female.

It's not PC ******** , I think she was just a good actor, and she got the part.
User avatar #64 to #63 - arsenalthegunners (12/23/2015) [-]
it is PC ******** as you have seen it yourself in many posts people photographed the sections of the text that clearly made hermione white. Also it does make it PC ******** since she was portrayed as white and now is being changed to black because the writer decided "I never specified" bla bla bla (diversity quota)

Well, ok. I never saw those pictures so I can't speak for that. I don't really care if Emma is the one playing her to be honest. I love Harry Potter, but most of the cast will be different, so why care about this one? If a white person played the new Hermione, you wouldn't even care...

It's not so much that a black actress is playing Hermione, but that the usual contingency of tumblr idiots and SJW "progressives" are claiming that Hermione is canonly black, and this stage play just put it out there more. I just wish people would make their own characters rather than trying to change existing ones. It doesn't mean anything if you take an already popular character and change them
User avatar #49 to #48 - heartlessrobot (12/23/2015) [-]
Really? If it isn't in the movie, and it isn't mentioned in any of the books, it's not canon, and cannot be canon.
User avatar #50 to #49 - quantumranger (12/23/2015) [-]
The argument is that since she was never explicitly stated as white, and has really curly brown hair, she must be black Theres some other stuff but it's all pretty dumb like that . It's just the usual "I say so, so it must be true, no matter how ridiculous" that accompanies stuff like this. The problem I have with it is that people do this for the sake of "diversity" or "representation", but when you have to take an already popular character and change something about them to get that representation, then it isn't real. This just reminds me of people who complained after Rowling said that Dumbledore was gay. They were upset because he wasn't obviously gay, and it never stated in the text that he was gay, so it shouldn't count for representation and she was a bad person for trying to get diversity points. This is the exact same thing but it's being held up as some sort of accomplishment .
User avatar #53 to #50 - kaiyuni (12/23/2015) [-]
Hermione however; is stated to be white (although it's only a couple times). Rowling is just saying this so that the play stops getting bad press over a black lead actress (I assume lead, since she's of the main trio). Here's a quote from Prisoner of Azkaban I found:

‘One moment, please, Macnair,’ came Dumbledore’s voice. ‘You need to sign, too.’ The footsteps stopped. Harry heaved on the rope. Buckbeak snapped his beak and walked a little faster.

Hermione’s white face was sticking out from behind a tree.

‘Harry, hurry!’ she mouthed.

So... there it is to be honest. And in every illustration; Hermione is drawn as white. She's even ******* white on the cover of the book!

While I don't mind a black Hermione (I just care about good actors, not race) it is noteworthy that Hermione isn't black, and people DO have a point.

Also Dumbledore being gay was totally just Rowling trying to get more diversity points.

#27 to #26 - mayoroftownsville ONLINE (12/23/2015) [-]
You not understanding the context doesn't make the joke bad.
User avatar #28 to #27 - captainprincess (12/23/2015) [-]
well in a way yes it does actually
but the fact remains the context isnt here
its elsewhere, as evidenced by it being necessary to explain it

the joke flopped and needs excuses to be un-flopped
but jokes are like cakes, and you can't un-bake a cake, or un-flop a bad joke
#29 to #28 - mayoroftownsville ONLINE (12/23/2015) [-]
There are lots of jokes that rely on cultural information that not everyone has. Someone who doesn't follow politics won't get jokes about specific politicians, but that doesn't make the jokes bad. Explaining the joke isn't making an excuse for it.
User avatar #31 to #29 - captainprincess (12/23/2015) [-]
Then to those people the joke is bad
This isn't a difficult concept and Im not sure why you're so obsessed with proving how awesome this joke is

is it personally important to you

And yes
explaining a joke is precisely making excuses for it, that is exactly what that is

God you you retards will complain and argue anything on this friggen site
#32 to #31 - mayoroftownsville ONLINE (12/23/2015) [-]
Sure man, if you want to say a joke is bad to people who are out of the loop then that's fine, but it doesn't allow for an end-all-be-all statement about whether or not the joke is good. Obviously it's worked well with its target audience, namely people who know about the controversy. You're like a person saying that X food is bad because it has Y in it and I don't like Y.

Explaining a joke doesn't write off its flaws, all it does is connect the dots for those who couldn't do it by themselves. You can explain a bad joke without making the claim that the joke is good. I don't actually think the joke is terribly funny, but it's clear the only reason you thought it was bad in the first place was a lack of information, and that goes back to what I said above.
#33 to #32 - captainprincess (12/23/2015) [-]
I had no idea this joke was so personal to you

depends, wizard spells have zero energy input and can bend the laws of space and time, by the time muggles catch up to the current magic they may have created colony worlds

nothing is shown in canon that even compares to what a 2000 pound dumb bomb can do. Hell, the most explosive thing we see is when magic goes wrong, and there are shoulder fired rockets/rpgs that produce a larger blast.

Long story short, from what we are shown in cannon, the only things that brings wizards to a threat level that modern muggle military units would actually give a **** about are:

1 apparation. This is the one thing that would equalize wizards with trained soldiers. However the pop would negate SOME of the value.

2 illusions. Invisibility is a huge advantage. That being said, it appears from cannon that any cast spell negates the invisibility. It is unknown if this is true of any other spell that would hide someone, but even so this creates a great tool for ambushes

3 mind control. This is the last big trump card, nothing like capturing some scouts and mind controlling them into taking a bomb back to base to **** up everyone's day.

and a wizarding war is shown in said books. We also see what are presented as extremely powerful wizards duel, wizards supposed to be as good as any wizard of legend, and a small artillery strike could do more damage than they dole out.

Therefore, judging military strength against military strength is valid based on the information provided.
User avatar #88 to #80 - fuzzyballs (12/24/2015) [-]
stop taking fiction seriously you stupid cunt
User avatar #55 to #19 - halor (12/23/2015) [-]
they also have a spell arresto momentum that can stop moving targets which would useful for stopping a plane or bomb/missile in mid air. as well as a spell that can disarm anyone

as for explosions there's these spells
harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Blasting_Curse
harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Expulso_Curse
harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Reductor_Curse
harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Eradication_Spell
#78 to #55 - tomthehippie (12/24/2015) [-]
the speed at which bombs and missiles travel is so fast that their reaction time would have to be precognitive.

As to the spells, blasting is too unfocused, RPG has that topped, due to being more focused. Expulso has force and focus, but relies on existing materiel to provide shrapnel, which provides most of the lethality in modern military explosives. Reductor is never shown to break solid rock or metal like an RPG could, and eradication seems to more vaporize. It is possible that military grade armor for tanks could withstand the above spells, especially with unmounted infantry support.
User avatar #39 to #19 - articulate (12/23/2015) [-]
How about fire that can't be put out? Just stand on the outskirts of a city and set fire to everything.
#79 to #39 - tomthehippie (12/24/2015) [-]
a point, but a military counter strike could easily devastate wizarding populations. also, special forces. No actual wizarding military is mentioned in cannon
User avatar #82 to #79 - articulate (12/24/2015) [-]
Also, dementors are under control of the ministry. They can't be seen by muggles, and probably wouldn't die to any form of physical damage.
#85 to #82 - tomthehippie (12/24/2015) [-]
this is unknown, but a wide area strike could possibly injure them. Even if not life threatening a dementor that couldn't grab on couldn't suck out their soul.

And, that could be two edged. It is shown clearly that dementors have no ***** to give. Dementors feeding on muggles might lead to dementors breeding like crazy, then dementors trying to eat everything.

This might be how the world ends bro.

muggles create special gear that protects dementors from spells that affect them, then unleash super dementors on the wizards. nothing can stop the super dementors, super dementors eat all the souls. all of them.
User avatar #87 to #85 - articulate (12/24/2015) [-]
Demontors feed on the patronus charm. Wizards offer them food, and they obey; They wouldn't side with the muggles. They don't have to grab on as evidenced by the scene by the lake in the 3rd movie.
You think the ministry is stupid, but still able to maintain secrecy for thousands of years?

There's no question wizards would win the war. Humans might win a battle, but not the war, and would take heavy casualties.
User avatar #81 to #79 - articulate (12/24/2015) [-]
I think a lot of wizards are just interspersed into the muggle population. Besides, wizards have force fields and anti-muggle wards. The aurors are practically military. A few "special forces" by the wizards is enough to stop any hope of the muggles doing anything. Overnight all the military leaders snuffed.
#83 to #81 - tomthehippie (12/24/2015) [-]
more like mind controlled, which is definitely a point. Basically my point was that in a direct conflict wizards would get pwned so hard core it would make the newbest of newbs feel more hardcore, but it wouldn't go like that. They would be sneaky ***** and just mind **** the muggles into ignoring them.
User avatar #84 to #83 - articulate (12/24/2015) [-]
Of course. Muggles stand no chance against wizards. They have god damn magic.
#86 to #84 - tomthehippie (12/24/2015) [-]
if wizards wage the war on their terms. however, we are shown that wizards in large are straight up pants on head, count to potato, my parents are cousins and so were their parents, retarded. So what are the chances that they would be smart enough to actually wage the war on their terms? You think average wizards wouldn't run around being dumb ***** and **** the war a million billion trillion ways to sunday? **** average wizards might just end up somehow giving muggles the key to artificial magick and then everyone is ****** .
