I've done that with the words "niche" and "macabre".
I know how to pronounce them correctly now, but I still read them as "nitch" and "maka-bray"

I would always think melancholy was something like melahn-kolee because such a dark word sounding like a combination of melons and cauliflower just seems silly.

That and before harry potter came out as a movie hermione was her-moyn
User avatar #47 to #32 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
is that how it is spelled? I have always thought it was "meloncally". I have never seen that word written. Neat
User avatar #27 to #1 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
niche has two pronunciations. one is like "nich" the other is "neech"
#89 to #27 - anon (01/10/2016) [-]
both are accepted, sure.
one proves you a fool though.
only pronounce it as neech if you want others to actually respect you and think you have a ******* brain.

User avatar #39 to #27 - agronimo ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
And... what's exactly the difference between nich and neech?
I'm not anglophone, I honestly have no ******* clue
User avatar #40 to #39 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
How you say it. Both are accepted ways of saying niche.
User avatar #42 to #40 - agronimo ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
But are they said differently? Ithought double E equaled I in english
User avatar #93 to #42 - newtamalego (01/10/2016) [-]
double e is an E sound like Knee and Tree

the I was an i sound like mitch and ditch
#104 to #93 - agronimo ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
I still can't see the difference
User avatar #48 to #42 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
It is of french origin. One is the french pronunciation, the other is English. Both are accepted as correct. (most loan words have many different pronunciations)
User avatar #25 to #1 - grovesimus (01/10/2016) [-]
Niche is like niish and macabre is pronounced like makaabr
User avatar #18 to #1 - bojesus (01/10/2016) [-]
My word is cache. I keep reading it as "cash-ay".
User avatar #28 to #18 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
Two pronunciations. "Cash-ay" and "cash"
User avatar #63 to #28 - bojesus (01/10/2016) [-]
Are you sure your not thinking of cachet?
User avatar #50 to #28 - erotictentacle ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
I always pronounced it cash-é....
User avatar #51 to #50 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
French loan word. Both are accepted. "Cash" is english version, "Cash-eh?" is the french version. In english, both are accepted. Finally my major in english pays off.
User avatar #52 to #51 - erotictentacle ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
Alright, since im a non native speaker, i will resort to asking you whenever im not sure how to pronounce a word.
I already got one too, its Deity.
User avatar #53 to #52 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
Two of this one as well.
"die-ity"
And
"dee- ity"
both are commonly accepted, but a priest may prefer one over the other based off the specific case.
dēədē, and dāədē Are the technical pronunciations.
User avatar #65 to #53 - Tusura (01/10/2016) [-]
Day-it-ee is also accepted.

All of the words in this thread are like that. I learned that macabre has two pronunciations.

My word was cacophony. It seems to happen to kids who read books past their general age groups. My teacher looked shocked when I brought up one of my mom's novels and asked her how to pronounce it.
#92 to #12 - anon (01/10/2016) [-]
Well maybe you shouldn't have brought one of your moms Harlequins to school.
#100 to #92 - CosplayNinja ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
Nah, it was a Stephen King or maybe Christopher Golden book if I remember right.
User avatar #2 to #1 - lathyrusvii (01/10/2016) [-]

User avatar #3 to #2 - DrollHumor ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
Niche is pronounced "knee-shhhh"

and Macabre is "ma-cob"

English is weird.
User avatar #44 to #3 - elsenortamatoe (01/10/2016) [-]
Niche is either "Knee-ish" or "Ni-shh" Both are accepted
Macabre is either məˈkäbrə or məˈkäb
User avatar #31 to #3 - borderlineparanoid (01/10/2016) [-]
I thought it was Ma-carb....
#24 to #3 - anon (01/10/2016) [-]
Actually the most widespread accepted pronunciation of niche is, in fact, "nitch."
