You're not supposed to let bonsai trees grow fruit. It uses a lot of energy which you'll need to correctly shape them.
User avatar #8 to #5 - brokentrucker (12/23/2013) [-]
Out of curiosity, why do you have to shape them? Does them being unshapely do anything detrimental to their health? Or is the entire appeal to owning a mini-tree based on the fact that they look pretty, so you keep them pretty?
User avatar #13 to #8 - areo0420 (12/23/2013) [-]
Prunning and wires (to keep the limbs from getting too large and taking up energy)
User avatar #14 to #13 - brokentrucker (12/23/2013) [-]
I see I see. So they use up all their energy? Could you potentially provide a high energy "diet" to sustain a fruit bearing bonsai?
User avatar #15 to #14 - areo0420 (12/23/2013) [-]
I'm not sure. I only know what I've read, unfortunately. Some plants will be able to, but I know that it won't really work with most things. what is grown probably won't be edible in such a small plant.

That's not to say you can't grow them larger. A big enough pot might support a big enough plant, but most fruit sporing plants need a lot of direct sunlight. I'd do some research before you decide. cerain trees are fragile... such as a cherry tree.
User avatar #16 to #15 - brokentrucker (12/23/2013) [-]
Ah. alright. It s along in teh future thing anyway. I'll give it more thought, but I think a small vanity project of fruit bearing bonsais would make for an interesting achievement.
User avatar #4 - theincorrigibleone (12/23/2013) [-]
The one on the top right looks like some type of persimmon.
I like to call 'em sky tomatoes since the ones native to where I live are very similar in outward appearance to cherry tomatoes. They just grow on 60ft tall trees.

I purchased a bonsai tree kit yesterday, and I'm really excited to grow one. The seeds are hanging out in the fridge until March 1st, and then I can start growing it into little seedlings. c:
