I tried my hands at bonsais a few times, but they usually don't hold very long. Kind of difficult to find the right living conditions if you don't know the exact species of the tree in the first place, so I'll probably not buy them again in the next best flower shop... Now I'm living in a rather dark apartment, do any of you folks know any kinds of trees which can be turned into bonsais and survive in a rather shady environment? It's not like it's pitch black in here, but all I have is one window facing north and now during winter the amount of daylight is rather slim.

Have you considered mushrooms? Some can look rather nice.

I did but I'm a tad afraid those will start growing in places they're not supposed to grow and in my single-room-apartment here that's a chance I would rather not take. Plus I have no clue how to care for them... How much water do they need for example?

I have one in my window, been going well so far. Don't water it on a schedule, water it when its dry, and mist it with water every so often. Mine hasn't died yet

My window-board is sadly enough to small to place anything on it, that's probably my biggest issue here

Hm, suppose I'll have to wait then with getting a new Bonsai till I move into a sunnier apartment...
