well in my head the safeties would be all the way back...so the linebacker would be halfback.....kind of a stretch, but i dont know who else it would be.
Okay so I did some research. Apparently my old high school football team had this position on defense, it's basically the position I played too.
Basically it's like a defensive back who acts like a linebacker, so usually he is lined up with the linebackers, and when needed he goes back with the safeties or corners. Though our school called it 'rover'. And it's basically what I played back in high school so I am surprised I had no clue what my position was called.
interesting. thanks for sharing the info...how does that fit into the system though? is it 2 linebackers and 2 defensive halfbacks that adjust accordingly?
The way we did it is by sacrificing one of our safeties. Our defense worked by having a 5 man defenive line, 2 middle linebackers, 2 corners, a safety, and the rover. The rover would usually be with the linebackers, but further out, almost like an outside linebacker. That was usually the role, to act as an outside linebacker and to align with either the strong or weak side of the opposing teams offense. But if we were expecting to go against a pass defense, he would act like another corner while one of the corners acted as a safety. Thats how we did it though.
