Unlike most fish that only breathe by collecting oxygen from the water through their gills, the betta can breathe below the water's surface as well as from above it. Bettas have an organ called a labyrinth located just behind their heads that allows them to breathe air. They can rise to the water's surface and take a gulp of air, and then swim back down as they please.

Probably my personal favorite fish. I had a tough one last me 5 years. I want to get another, but I want to save up to get a bigger tank for it. Even though they can live in a minimum of 1 gallon, it still depressingly small for them imo. I hate it when people put them in those small teacup sized tanks. It would be like living in a closet.

before Circulino, I had, throughout my life, various bettas, some of them lasted for about 2 years, but this last one was the coolest and with the most interesting temper, as far as fish personality goes. Too bad it came in with an unnoticed sickness. Only my first lived in a small tank, the others had something between 2 to 10 L to live, usually with plenty of algae and sharing space and getting along with a corydora or a plecos. it's some really good thing to care at home, because it's easy, fairly clean, doesn't make any noise, but still entertains (also it's stunningly beautiful).
