I can't be 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that both shows have ended, and if I recall, the main reason was because the later the shows got in, there was pretty much one specific way to design your bot so that it was pretty much unstoppable. When this was realized, everyone started using the model and those who didn't had their **** pushed in. It got really repetitive to the point where it was no longer interesting. A shame, I could honestly imagine some sort of newer version being made with some sort of guidelines restricting bots like that.
It really is sad when they had some really interesting and powerful bots like Razer with the massive claw capable of 3 tons of pressure per square inch, capable of piercing any enemy bot.
Yup. The interesting weapons were the coolest, and knockouts where robots were destroyed was where it really shined. Its like boxing, you want to see the knockout blows. Instead it pretty much always went to a judges decision.
I mean I get that a wedge bot is easier to build, maintain, and holds up better between matches. It really was the best design, but it just so happened that the best design was also the most boring.
Wheely Big Cheese was an exception. That flipper had a serious kick to it, sending robots into the fences. It even had the power to topple the unflippable Sir Killalot, though it never got the opportunity.
Unluckily not anymore though there are still some competitions around the US, UK and Brazil. Last summer I went this one on Miami with my university with a 60lb robot. Pretty nice to see robots beat the **** out of each other IRL.
Interestingly now drumbots are more popular than wedges, they are a pretty good counter to them and they do a lot of damage to any kind of robot (as expected from a 10kg cylinder rotating at 8000RPM).
Funny thing is that now most of the teams use Lithium batteries which tend to burst in fire if they get hit hard enough so we got a fair share of robots bursting into flames during the competition.
heh.. i remember back in the days i was obsessed with that stuff.. so much that i removed the chassis from an rc car i owned and ducktaped knives all over the darn thing. Good times..
If you guys like this try out robocraft on steam it's f2p so it has a couple of ******** elements in it but nothing beats the feeling of recking 5-9 people in one game with your custom designed robot-tank-flyer thing.
