On July 4, 1999, during the Kargil War, hard dick Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was serving as the leading scout of a team out of the 13th BN JAK Rifles and tasked with capturing Flat Top of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley; which was held by Pakistani troops. After having scaled the cliff all the way to the top, the team was pinned down by machine gun fire from an enemy bunker, about 150 meters away.
Kumar, realizing the magnitude of the problem and the detrimental effect this bunker would have in the capture of Area Flat Top, charged towards the enemy bunker through a hail of automatic fire. During his dash, he was shot in the chest two times and once in the forearm. Despite his injuries, he continued the charge towards the bunker and killed three enemy soldiers in hand to hand combat. After racking up his soul count, he crept towards a second enemy bunker. The enemy soldiers, taken completely by surprise, fled their position. As they were running away, Kumar picked up a machinegun and killed every single one of them.
For his actions, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was awarded India's highest medal, the Param Vir Chakra. Since it's inception in 1950, the medal was awarded 21 times and only 7 managed to wear it alive.
