dogs stem from wolves, wolves are pack animals, more importantly, wolves have "nannies" wolves that stay with the young to protect them at all times, while the other wolves go out hunting.
basically this dog thinks it's role in the "pack" (family) is to be a nanny, since it doesn't hunt.
so he/she/it views it as it's one sole purpose to protect this new member of the pack.

i think dogs just naturally become defensive of babies in general. they can feel how defenseless they are and they become protective. My brother brings my infant nephew over to the house all the time, and my tow dogs go ape **** if you make any sudden movements near the baby.

Human babies are as cute to dogs as puppies are to us.

When the baby's gonna be old enough to understand what a dog is it'll be dead

Not necessarily! While its true that the baby will probably outlive the dog, the smaller the dog the longer they tend to live, and even larger dogs like Retrievers can live up to 15 years! This dog does not look very old, so its very likely that the baby could even grow up to be a teenager before the dog dies!

Here's my daughter with Louie, a german sherphard-rottweiler mix. She used to be afraid of him but they quickly got to like eachother. Unfortunately that dog is part of my grandmother-in-law's household. I would have loved to have him. There's another dog in that household, a beagle, that my wife has had since it was a puppy (the beagle is now approximately 18 years old or so), and she (the dog) could tell from the early stages that my wife was pregnant, so she would be extra close and protective, and when our daughter was born, she was always there to protect her and keep the other dogs off her, even though the dog herself was such a small old lady.
