Kylo Ren may have slaughtered his jedi-in-training peers, but in no way does that mean he's a master. Luke was ashamed and went into exile (which is I guess what Jedi do) which made Ren the toughest fish in the puddle in terms of jedi-ness. Not to mention that was years ago and had no real practice since. Who around him can fight him with a lightsaber? Storm troopers? The old **** hologram man?
Rey, who has shown competence in fighting (we don't know her upbringing, we don't really know much about her past) shows up with a lightsaber against a wounded, out of practice, emotionally torn, padawon-tier Kylo Ren and eventually gets the upper hand and beats him. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.
R2-D2 booting up seemingly randomly at the end was convenient, but nobody seems to be putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Luke left, R2 basically shuts down with most of the map of where Luke is installed in it. There is one more piece of the galaxy map. If the New Order found the piece BB-8 was carrying, and found R2's piece, Luke would be no more. R2 only rebooted (you know what I mean) after the Starkiller Base was destroyed so that Luke and the future of the galaxy wouldn't be destroyed.
