meh, personally in all my 23 years of being alive, never ONCE have i wished someone (of any faith/colour) a merry christmas, and had them get mad at me. NEVER! People like the sentiment and also understand that its a festive greeting, not an attack on their culture.

Worked at a theater in concessions during the holidays, told people Merry Christmas to no complaint. Eventually a supervisor noticed me saying that and came over while I was helping people to tell me that I couldn't say Merry Christmas and that I had to say instead "Happy Holidays"

Immediately after she said that the woman I was helping leaned forward and said "oh forget that, nobody will mind. Merry Christmas" with a smile, the people in earshot said Merry Christmas to me as well, the chain kept up for a nice while before we hit a slow period and after that not 100% of people said it, but still it was pretty sweet. I think that was the same day that I made a little black kids x-mas dreams come true.

I know this sounds like a tumblry "and then everyone applauded", but felt like telling the story.

It might be related to your geographic location and/or the customer base of your grocery store. I have had people get offended when I've wished them a merry christmas a couple times. **** is retarded.

It happens all the time. Being friendly and talking to people you don't know is not only acceptable in the Southern part of the USA, it is the norm. In fact not talking back to a stranger can be considered rude. So in this kind of culture you would probably wish a lot of people you do not know Merry Christmas, as well as receive the seasonal greeting from others.

By this point Christmas is a commercial holiday more than anything. It seems pointless for people to become offended nowadays.

I have to agree. I mean, in practically every state, RIGHT after Halloween ended, Christmas stuff just rolled into local stores. I understand that Christmas is the holiday of giving, celebration, and gettin' together with loved ones; I get that. The commercialism part is just what gets to me.
Not to advertise, but John Grisham wrote a great book (That was adapted into an okay movie) about the idea of, well, Skipping Christmas which is the title of the book.

Try to be the best person you can be until that day comes

Saying you're agnostic doesn't tell me whether you believe in some form of deity or higher power, it just points out the fact that you're open to possibility that you're wrong.

User avatar #6 to #5 - thefallenlord (12/01/2015) [-]
*facepalm*
Okay once again. (Hell, you have 2 pictures that explain this)
Answering the question "do you believe in god" by saying "I'm agnostic" is the same as answering the question "What computer do you have" by saying "White one". It's technically like saying "I don't know AND I don't care"
#7 to #6 - evilhomer (12/01/2015) [-]
**evilhomer used "*roll picture*"**
**evilhomer rolled image**
Okay I'll try to explain it simpler
I used to believe in God as child, but then stopped because I started questioning stuff.
If there is a god, great. If there isn't a god, well at least I tried not being a **** person while alive.
I don't dislike religious people heck my mother even works as an accountant at priest seminary so I've talked to countless of catholic priests, and they are pretty good people , whatever works for you good for you, but if your belief system implores you to despise others just because, then that person is stupid for fallowing such a flawed thing.

TL;DR Trying to be a good person should be common sense, despite their being or not being a god. And I don't really care if there is, or is not. I'm trying to live for the now

Let's stop it at that. Religion and Politics are the two things I hate discussing. I came here to laugh not to debate
User avatar #8 to #7 - thefallenlord (12/01/2015) [-]
I'm not trying to convince you to chance your mind nor am I trying to invalidate your belief.

All I'm saying is that term 'agnostic' doesn't mean what you think it means.
It simply means you are not sure whether your belief system (whatever it means) is factually correct or not but you're still true to it. You can be Agnostic Atheist (aka "I don't belive in god/s but I'm open to the possibility of there being one or more) or Agnostic Christian (I believe in God of the Bible but I'm not sure if it's correct but I still adhere to the teachings of the Bible and/or Church). Hell, you could be Agnostic follower of the Temple of Black Light or Misanthropic Luciferian Order, the result is allways the same - I belive 'XYZ' but I'm open to the possibilty of being wrong.

Get your terminology right

P.S. I salute you for being open with your beliefs
User avatar #9 to #8 - evilhomer (12/01/2015) [-]
well I know what agnostic means but It's my fault not adding the fact before of me not believing in a deity.
In my opinion you can be 100% sure with a lot of things, because of facts and stuff, except religion. You don't actually know if there is a god until you check that fact after you die.

This ended surprisingly well
User avatar #11 to #9 - thefallenlord (12/01/2015) [-]
Cheers mate.
I think even FJ can be place for somewhat civil and polite discussion.
Also technically you can't be 100% certain about anything because you can't be 100% certain you're not insane for example. 'Cogito ergo sum' I think therefore I am... rest is up to interpretation. For example mathematics are humanity's objective explanations of our subjective experience of (presumably) objective reality around us. But once again we can't be cartain it's objective, we can only act like it is because for all intents and purposes it is.
User avatar #71 to #9 - markipliergame (12/02/2015) [-]
agnostic/gnostic = knowledge
atheist/theist = belief

Both sets of words answer completely different questions.
#68 to #7 - anon (12/02/2015) [-]
You and I took very different paths. I thirsted for knowledge as a child and read every science book I could. I asked as many questions about my faith as possible and stumped most of my family, and even myself.

Ultimately, this questioning drove me into spiritual crisis at fifteen, and I ended up Rededicating myself to the Christian religion. I count myself as truly Saved at fifteen, even though I walked down the aisle at six, because age fifteen was when I chose Jesus without pressure or expectations from others.

What you have described is agnostic atheism.

Unless there's a god you actively believe in, that's atheism.

It's real easy. Takes no effort. There's a wide variety of types. Yours is commonly called "weak atheism" which is fine. Doesn't change a thing about your views. Just wanted you to know what it means.

really the only thing keeping me from being a full out Gnostic Atheist is that there is no possible way to scientifically disprove god, as unlikely as it is, I guess since its an unfalsifiable hypothesis its like still a little possible? I dont know, I guess it would be the same as some dude saying "I have a unicorn following behind me at all times but its invisible and the only way you can see it is when no one is looking." and its like "Well **** dude I guess what ever floats your boat, yeah I guess that cant be disproven so no mater how unlikely it is, theres still that small inkling of a chance that its possible."

User avatar #37 - BmanX (12/01/2015) [-]
I'm kind of the opposite in that as an atheist, I want people to say Merry Christmas over Happy Holidays or Merry Xmas or whatever. Christmas really isn't treated as a strictly religious holiday anymore. It's about family and presents and all the festivities, and it's just been ingrained into our culture as a wonderful time of the year, whether you treat it religiously or not. Trying to tip-toe around calling it Christmas is stupid, with the exception being if you celebrate another holiday like Hanukkah or Kwanzaa instead of Christmas, which is perfectly understandable.
#70 to #37 - anon (12/02/2015) [-]
Kwanzaa was invented by a convicted felon who beat and tortured a woman. The entire "holiday" is a grouping of pan-African stereotypes.

#75 to #67 - anon (12/02/2015) [-]
It still is. You don't have to be Christian to enjoy the holiday, but there's a reason for the season, and that reason is reflected in why we selflessly give material goods to those who matter to us.

You do realize that there is no where in scripture saying that the 25th is actually Jesus's birthday right? Plus, the 25th of Dec. as a holiday was a Paigan Holiday before the christians even thought about making it a Holiday, the just took what the Paigans did and slapped a new coat of paint over it.

I'm not a believer, although I wouldn't call myself an atheist either sounds too euphoric nowadays

I enjoy christmas to their fullest - as a custom. Because why not? It has been present throughout generations, I was raised with the spirit of having christmas, it has always been nothing but good time, including spending time not only with family, but also friends. I don't think there's need to get all religious about it, and it's not hypocrisy if you don't. The boundaries get a little blurry, since christmas is not only about religion, but also a part of pop culture, and in many countries something integrated into society basing on its previous pagan beliefs.

History is too complex to be one-sided about it. It's just better to enjoy that time for what it's worth and not make things complicated when they don't have to be.
