I understand vaccines for diseases. But I do not understand is vaccines for the common cold or flu.

A vaccine protects against bacterial and fungal infections of a certain type pretty much forever.

So take measles, which is a bacterial infection. If I got a measles vaccine I will not get measles for the rest of my life (within reason, it is possible for vaccines to wear off but only after a long time) because a vaccine "infects" me with measles so my body knows how to fight against it. If I got measles and survived, it is guaranteed I would not get measles again because my immune system knows how to fight it. So a vaccine is immunity from a disease without having to go through it, it is especially useful for diseases like polio as it is very hard to survive polio without incapacitating yourself by hooking one up to an iron lung.

The common flu works differently, it constantly changes every year. So if we take a sample from where it first pops up in a year, develop a vaccine we can ship that vaccine around the world so nobody will get that strain of flu.

The common cold cannot be vaccinated as it is a viral infection and constantly changing, a new strain appears very other month.

I never got vaccinated, and neither did my siblings. And my whole family has been perfectly fine my whole life. So **** that. People are allowed to have their opinions and choose how they live or die, without being treated rudely or with cruelty.
User avatar #93 to #64 - malinko ONLINE (08/16/2014) [-]
you're thinking about it in the short term buddy, from your own little life.
Vaccines are not only to make the individual healthy and protected from **** , but without vaccinating the entire human race starts to slowly grow weaker and weaker defences toward epidemics.

So you, your family and other stupid families like yours, are literally hurting the human race.

I'm not vaccinating my kids, because I LOVE THEM. That would be incredibly irresponsible, making me a bad parent. I'd probably end up endangering them. I'm going to have a doctor do it instead.
User avatar #59 - bradonloch (08/16/2014) [-]
I didn't vaccinate my kids. It's mostly because I don't have any though.
User avatar #37 - bobthedilder (08/16/2014) [+] (6 replies)

I let the nurse do it for me.
Just kidding, I don't have kids.

At times like this I'm glad I live in Finland, where I'd say about 99% of people think that vaccinations are okay and good for you instead of "HURDUR IS GUVRNMUN CONSPIRCACRY NUUU"

Goddamn reading some of the stupid **** in the comments here is giving me a headache.

Don't be stupid, get yourself and your kids vaccinated.
User avatar #175 - katarinaismywaifu (08/16/2014) [-]

Fair question: If your kids are vaccinated and cannot get x disease because of said vaccinations, why are you freaking out over my kid not having it? Not going autism route, but if you look at whats in most vaccines it raises a few questions, like why there is mercury and unfertilized chicken embryo being forced into someones blood stream
User avatar #173 to #148 - oosime (08/16/2014) [-]
your kid will spread it to other kids who cannot be vaccinated due to medical issues.
User avatar #121 - gigamuffin (08/16/2014) [+] (5 replies)
My question is why aren't vaccines mandatory?
