we are very good at neuwörtererfindung*
User avatar #45 to #40 - solidderking (11/23/2015) [-]
which includes the word neuwörtererfindung, which also happens to be a neuwörtererfindung
User avatar #47 to #45 - theoldfritz (11/23/2015) [-]

Sometimes it gets ridicolous. This is an Otter. It comes in different shapes. Fischotter, Seeotter, Zwergotter.
#20 to #19 - enferax (11/23/2015) [-]
This is a Kreuzotter. Obviously a snake. I think at this point they didn't care anymore.
User avatar #21 to #7 - thescyle (11/23/2015) [-]
you see, the good thing about this is, in german you rarely have to ask what something means. Just ask what its called and you probably get the explanation right along in the name.

glove = handschuh
that's right, hand shoe
User avatar #27 to #9 - mion (11/23/2015) [-]
Well, gloves are like shoes for your hands in winter, so it's not too odd imo.

Most make a lot of sense, and are easy to remember.

Your favourite anime is 'stinktier'

I've been thinking about doing something like this for Swedish, we have many funny words too. In Swedish, sloth is "sengångare" which means late-walker. Some others are:
English - Swedish - Literal translation
Glasses - Glasögon - Glass-eyes
Uterus - Livmoder - Life-mother
Execute - Avrätta - De-right
Strawberry - Jordgubbe - Earth-man
Dentist - Tandläkare - Tooth-healer
Whiskers - Morrhår - Growl-hairs
And the weirdest one I came up with:
Pillowcase - Örngott - Eagle-good (wtf?)
User avatar #44 to #17 - theoldfritz (11/23/2015) [-]
The same in some slavish languages
Naocale - on eyes - Glasses
Maternica - mother insides - uterus
pogubiti (execute like killing) - kill over - execute
zubar - toother - dentist

many words are bastardisations of two regular ones, mainly becouse of the panslavish movements like the illirian on greatmoravian one which tended to preserve the language anr replaced most of the foreign names with their new ones

Örn är öron på gammelsvenska. Har inget med fågeln att göra.
User avatar #28 to #26 - gadgetzan (11/23/2015) [-]
Där ser man, det visste jag inte. Låter ganska mycket mer logiskt

Where have I heard fledermaus before? I feel like it's something I used to hear referred to on YouTube a lot. It was like tops fledermaus or something like that. Maybe I heard the yogscast talking about it?

**** , that's gonna bug me now.
User avatar #15 to #14 - shaddyz [OP]ONLINE (11/23/2015) [-]
fledermaus is a piece from mozart
User avatar #16 to #15 - lordsaucy (11/23/2015) [-]
That might be what I'm thinking about but I feel like it was referring to a person or group when I was hearing it a lot. I'd hear something along the lines of 'tops fledermaus did this'.
Maybe it was a youtube channel.

Taofledermaus? The guy with the crazy weapons and ammo?
User avatar #22 to #14 - skidbladnir (11/23/2015) [-]
There's a guy on youtube called taofledermaus.
I don't know his channel but sometimes heard of him.

Also, i'm from austria, so i can tell you that the tao part of his name doesn't mean anything in german.
User avatar #49 to #22 - lordsaucy (11/24/2015) [-]
THANK YOU! That was bugging the hell out of me.
User avatar #2 - basalm (11/22/2015) [-]

User avatar #10 - FunnyJunkTerrorist (11/23/2015) [-]
i was looking for jew listed in there
User avatar #12 to #10 - melwach (11/23/2015) [-]
You and me both know that jews shouldn't (even) be considered animals.
#43 to #12 - epicawe ONLINE (11/23/2015) [-]
Yet they concider non-jews animals.
User avatar #42 to #10 - theoldfritz (11/23/2015) [-]

To be brutally honest, this is what most names are.

Take bear. It means "brown".
User avatar #34 to #18 - TheGermanGuy (11/23/2015) [-]
no?
User avatar #46 to #35 - solidderking (11/23/2015) [-]
well, the word bear derives from the word brown, but bear doesnt mean brown, so TheGermanGuy wasn't actually wrong
#48 to #46 - hongkonglongdong ONLINE (11/23/2015) [-]
And truthahn doesn't mean threatening chicken, it means turkey.
User avatar #36 to #35 - TheGermanGuy (11/23/2015) [-]

Porcupines live in trees now?
#32 to #25 - miwauturu ONLINE (11/23/2015) [-]
Yes, porcupines are actually excellent climbers, and regularly spend lots of time in trees.
#24 - anon (11/23/2015) [-]
the only term for dugong i've know so far was seekuh which means seacow since it's pretty much doing the same things a landcow does
User avatar #6 - eatcawk (11/23/2015) [-]
im thinking of a cow. it wasnt on the chart
User avatar #29 to #6 - remilia (11/23/2015) [-]
