Animal facts comp : BIRDS
Hi guys! Here is the first comp about unknow animals or facts. Birds are starting off the serie!
The kiwi
The kiwi
The kiwi is found in New Zealand and is a small ground bird. The weird thing about this bird is its way of reproduction. The female will keep an egg inside her for 30 days, ending up taking so much room in her body that she will have to fast for the last 2-3 days. Her belly will be so big, it will get irritated on the ground, and she sometimes puts it in cold water to help reduce the pain. When she finally lays the egg, the father will incubate it, resting on it for 70-80 days, because of their low body temperature. The baby kiwi then hatch and already has its feathers, looking like a tiny clone of its parents.
The vampire finch
The vampire finch lives in the Galapagos islands and discovered a way to survive when found was low, by drinking blood from sea bird. It hides in their tails, where they can't reach them and peck at the skin until it bleeds. They also attack the newborns or the eggs. Too break the egg, they stand on their head and push the egg with their legs, to make it roll and break on a rock.
The Greater honey guide

This bird actually is fine when full size. The newborns are pretty nasty. Just like the cuckoo bird, they lay their eggs in other birds' nest. The honeyguide will then hatch already bigger and instead of pushing his opponents off the nest, it will use a sharp "hook" at the end of its beak to tear them appart. The hook will fall when the bird gets older.

This adorable little bird is actually a predator. Since it is lacking sharp claws or beak, it found others way to hunt and kill. It will eat mice, lizards and birds. To attract other birds, it will imitate their song before hammering down to death. When it catches a prey, like a mouse, it will find a bush full of thorns and forcefully impale the animal on it.
The bassian trush
This bird is not creepy, but rather cute and funny. When searching for food, usually worms, it will farts over and over again. The gas seem to disturb the worms and they reveal their location, making them an easy meal.
The common poorwill
This is a unique bird. It lives in rather arid climate and has the particularity to be the only bird to hibernate, like a bear. When it gets colder, it finds a crack in the rocks and fall asleep. When it gets warmer during spring, it wakes up.

Penguins

[big2][gray-azure]Penguins usually live in cold climate, but some specie live close to the equator, digging themselves burrow to keep their eggs cool.
Once a year penguins experience a catastrophic molt ( that is the real name for it) where they change all their feathers. Because of this, they can't swim and therefore, can't hunt. They fast for 2-3 weeks.[gray-azure][big2]
So that was my first comp! I plan to make more, with different animal categories.
