Expect not the world to change because you demand it.
Demand not the world to change because you find unsuitable to you.
Never find the world unsuitable, lest you could be the one making it so.

You cannot change the world by changing others.
You change the world by changing yourself.

To me life is like a big ass canvas, and each person gets to leave their own mark on it. Some will make a bigger mark than others, some marks will be beautiful, and some will be terrible, and though you will die before you ever see the end result, you feel good for having contributed something.

www.upworthy.com/one-of-putins-homophobic-spokesmen-is-shamed-on-the-daily-show-and-thats-the-least-awesome-part?c=ufb1

You can see the full video here (if you're not in the US you need to use something like Hola because it's from the Daily Show and they don't like the rest of the world apparently).

Could somebody explain this to me? This quote contradicts itself.

If nothing you do matters -- Nothing will matter, the same outcome will occur.
then all that matters is what we do -- At least you tried to fix it, even if you failed.

The idea is that even if it doesn't work, at least you did something.

I'm guessing this is in reference to the whole "gays in Russia" shitstorm. Seeing as she says "I really protest just to not be ashamed of me, of my way of living" one can assume she is gay, to which I respond: What children/grandchildren?

Did I kill the moment too hard?
#47 to #38 - unholyjebus (02/17/2014) [-]
>Many gay people have biological children
>Many gay people have adopted children
>She might have succumb to social pressure to be in a straight relationship earlier in life where she had kids
>She might have not realized she was gay until later in life

What the quote at the end means is that ultimately, life has no meaning. We all die, and all the people that knew those people will die, and finally, the world will end, the sun will explode, the universe will end and there will be no trace that any of us existed. There isn't an end game, something which can be achieved which will ultimately mean anything and because of this, the only thing that does matter are the things we do now. The only thing that matters are the emotions we feel now. The only thing that matters is the pain and injustice people needlessly experience all around the world. This is what makes this quote so profound in this context; life's to precious to spend inflicting pain onto others.

Can someone enlighten me on the current state of russia?

Americans are self-righteous is what we are. Homosexual intercourse was legalized by Russia in 1993. It wasn't fully legalized in the US until 2003.

Russia has allowed homosexuals to serve in the military since 2003; the US kept "don't ask, don't tell" until 2011.

The current issues are more subtle than people seem to think. Russia (sorry to say) values personal freedoms more, which is why who you sex is your own business. Similarly, they value being able to pass their own values onto their children, which is why they ban "the distribution of 'propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations' to minors".

It'd be a different story if athletes were facing discrimination, but they're not. Intolerance is going to another country and expecting them to have exactly the same views as you.

That quote makes absolutely no sense. Am I missing something?
User avatar #49 to #19 - freebrainsforall (02/17/2014) [-]
The point of the quote is that if the end result of our actions are ultimately meaningless, then the actions themselves are the only things to have meaning, and not the consequences.

Even if what you're doing won't change anything, neither will anything else in the grand scheme of things, so you might as well do the right thing. Even if you didn't accomplish anything permanent, you still did the best thing you could have done, and not fighting back would have been just as meaningless even if you gained more personally.

Even if protesting for gay rights won't accomplish anything in Russia, in the end this person by herself can do nothing that will have mattered in the long run, so she might as well do the right thing and protest anyway.

Y'all fuckers need to think about the original context before ya post dumb shit.
