Well not completely random, there was some thought to it. He wanted a somewhat random funny number. He wanted a short number that didn't end in 0. Had to seem like just some random number.

4 is not shi. 4 is pronounced yon. Ich, ni, son, yon, go

That's 1 to 5. So, by the method shown in the image, its yonni, not shini.

Shi is the onyomi (borrowed Chinese reading), yon is the kunyomi (native Yamato reading). Both mean four.

yeah it depends on situation a lot. its mostly shi when writing in kanji. when speaking its yon. but only in kanji is it 4. when writing shi in hiragana it means city. not sure what it means in katakana though.

yeah they have 2 alphabets and the two are then combined to make kanji, the most commonly used alphabet. altough, not all children will understand kanji as it takes a long time to learn plus it requires that you know the other two alphabets first. kanji is a way of making writing japanese faster but if you were to speak exactly what is read it would have a different meaning.
