>tfw you actually published in peer reviewed journals

I was really proud of it. Arguably better than getting my Master's
User avatar #17 to #2 - Customer Services (10/02/2015) [-]
As well, i'll probably publish my master's thesis when it'll be done in two years
User avatar #55 to #17 - butwhynot (10/03/2015) [-]
Here's to hoping you will find something new and publishable! I was pretty proud when my papers got published, it's a pretty good feeling, if you think you have a chance to get something published you should go for it.

Do it faggot,
What University was it associated with?

I guess it doesn't necessarily need to be associated with a university

woah for real, cool what was it on
User avatar #14 to #7 - butwhynot (10/02/2015) [-]
Math papers, non-linear optimization to be specific. I'm not linking though since it reveils my name. I was doing a PhD at a Dutch university at the time.

summarize conclusions?

if you don't want to because name that's fine.

Non-linear optimization, as in 3D Least-squaring?
User avatar #53 to #20 - butwhynot (10/03/2015) [-]
Nah it was on semidefinite optimization and related topics, like copositive and polynomial optimization.

link us bro i want to read

Going to sound like a douche, but I have also published a peer reviewed journal article, except it was a history article through Appalachian State University.

I have mixed feelings. It is good that the general public is getting more information, but yeah those "IFL science" articles that keep getting posted on facebook can be annoying.

i feel like a big bang theory effect will start to happen
#44 to #10 - rollfourexplain (10/03/2015) [-]
What's the Big Bang Theory Effect? You're referring to the TV show when you say that, right?
User avatar #56 to #44 - donatelo (10/03/2015) [-]
Oh yea. Sorry I should have specified
User avatar #5 to #3 - darknak (10/02/2015) [-]
Yeah but it's still a good way to start when you don't know much. or even if you do, personally they keep me informed of what's new and after i dig deeper.
User avatar #13 to #5 - drpenguinz (10/02/2015) [-]
there is no reason to start when you dont know much...
the only thing youll need in your life as a non-scientist is math, all other info is just a waste of time if you are not going to use it in any kinda way
#28 to #13 - revelent (10/03/2015) [-]
Physics and chemistry are pretty damn useful to do various things and not killing yourself trying.

Doing what right? Trying to become at least slightly knowledgeable on something that could be useful to you?
Who the **** cares what most people know or don't know?
You said only math is is the only science remotely useful to the layman. and I'm saying physics and chemistry can be useful in daily life. Why are you going on about the random "did you know?" posts when that's not even what I was talking about?

I'm studying in physic/bio/chemistry and i don't know what the **** you're talking about. Classes are just to get a paper to prove you really learn this stuff. I don't understand how you can say it's better for people to stay stupid because **** learning something you're not 100% in. People must learn, that's how you get a educated civilization instead of a bunch of swiny primates with a brain. don't say people are stupid or ignorant if you say they shouldn't learn and educate themselves
User avatar #34 to #29 - Dropkicksxxx (10/03/2015) [-]
Maybe people just like to learn or find things interesting, and don't have to be a pretentious asshole about things. I hope you don't buy a car, i mean why would you if you're not going to race, and especially if you can't tear it down and rebuild it yourself.
User avatar #51 to #34 - drpenguinz (10/03/2015) [-]
people need cars in their every day life
thats no comparison
im not tryin to be a "pretentious asshole" about stuff.
User avatar #57 to #13 - donatelo (10/03/2015) [-]
This is dumb.
User avatar #58 to #57 - drpenguinz (10/03/2015) [-]
seems so :c
User avatar #59 to #58 - donatelo (10/03/2015) [-]
And I'm just curious, are you saying other fields of science are a waste of time?
User avatar #60 to #59 - drpenguinz (10/03/2015) [-]
no, im just saying going too deep into stuff...is kinda a waste of time and ends in lots of "superficial knowledge" (thats what dict.cc translates me "Halbwissen" (german word) to) . people should care more about their own profession. it kinda seems like people feel smart googling unnecessary facts or whatever...

science in general isnt a waste of time.

>mfw when entire existence as a grad student is reading increasingly complicated and boring journal articles
#12 to #6 - anon (10/02/2015) [-]
i rather read a hundred unedited science research papers than write for a journal, to be honest. you think reading them is bad? get ready for when they expect you to write them.
#18 to #6 - anon (10/02/2015) [-]
>mfw you use mfw wrong
MFW STANDS FOR MY FACE WHEN
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PUT WHEN
User avatar #19 - Sterski (10/02/2015) [-]
Hey, how about that, you can be interested in scientific stuff without being a scientist.

Like, damn, I love hearing about advancements in our understanding of the universe and robotics and whatever, but of course you give me something like that and I ain't got time for that **** I'm very busy watching anime and eating doritos in my underwear.
User avatar #25 - fadetometallica (10/03/2015) [-]
I like science when other people do it and tell me about it
User avatar #24 - darksideofthebeast (10/03/2015) [-]
Breaking news: Some people like music but don't play instruments.
In other news: some people like TV shows but don't make them.

Yea, we get it.
User avatar #37 to #24 - elcreepo (10/03/2015) [-]
Yeah but reading peer reviewed journals =/= doing science

All you're doing is learning about the science others have done

I love learning about other galaxies, stars, exoplanets, etc. But I will openly admit I would be lost if someone else wasn't doing the research for me. I suck at all sciences
User avatar #26 - oceanfrank (10/03/2015) [-]
I contributed to at least %50 of the data collected for one of my professors published economics papers on Central African development and it's overall GDP increase. I can tell because his peer reviewed publication had a graph that was literally drawn for my research paper by me except made in Excel. He never even mentioned me in his paper .
User avatar #30 to #26 - doctorprofessornv (10/03/2015) [-]
That's blatant plagiarism, call him out on it (assuming you have already passed his class so he can't screw with your grade).
User avatar #31 to #30 - oceanfrank (10/03/2015) [-]
Eh I mean he sort of mentioned me. He did put a footnote that some of his findings were done by students in his class, I just wish at least the graph had a little footnote saying it was created by me but it can be done by anybody tbh as long as you have the information, which he did have in his paper. Besides I was never really one to give a **** about people taking my research. As long as people see it I dont really have a reason (besides copyright ones) to tell him anything about it.
User avatar #32 to #31 - doctorprofessornv (10/03/2015) [-]
Well if you're okay with it then I guess there isn't a problem.
User avatar #38 to #26 - mexicanfood (10/03/2015) [-]

But... but... peer reviewed journals hold the secret to the universe and aids literally

Knowing things is how we prevent ourselves from eating dirt
User avatar #48 - iridium (10/03/2015) [-]
Peer-reviewed journal articles are the **** though. That's some of the least biased and most raw scientific information out there.

Pretty much all these fedora wearing biblebashers who says the bible is a book full of lies...

While I'm not defending the bible (I didn't even read it actually), I don't ahve the right to say it is all bogus untll I actually read it and interpret for myself
#42 - anon (10/03/2015) [-]
if anything it would be good that actual scientists are getting the notoriety they deserve... or that the public would become more educated through their own pursuits in science...but thats not whats happening

whats happening is the talking points have changed, the playbooks for all the socialites have shifted. nothing new. theres no actual science going on, and the people who become brilliant scientist dont get ladies for their jobs...if anything they get them for the same reasons they always did... charisma and good looks.

one offshoot that could occur however is that the people who are breeding now WILL influence their children to becomes scientists or at least appreciate the work being done by them... but I have a feeling this is just a fad and it will fade..
