In France we have a **** lot of taxes on everything, and those castles are in the middle of nowhere + The land wich is attached to the castles is usually protected, not legally buildable...

You can buy one of these, but all your wealth will go into taxes, an you will end up living as an ermit in the middle of the forest, hunting and cutting your own firewood...

Rent out parts of it to cover these costs. But yeah, that's where these castles get expensive.

Expensive? ***** more like un maintainable. It simply isn't feasible to own and maintain properties like these anymore, the cost of the staff needed is simply to high.

The most valuable thing you get is the land and that is what surprise me. It seems like the land should be more expensive than that.

I think the land is cheaper because of laws protecting it. It would be very hard to build anything on most of them.

if i was even in the ballpark to consider buying a 5.6 million dollar castle in Europe, i dont think heating costs/property taxes would be something that is totally concerning to my pocket

Just robe yourself in furs and linens if you get cold.
And a stick wrapped in pitch-soaked cloth is cheap.
