The colonies did ask, several times, fairly nicely. then were ignored, very rudely. After britan lost the revolutionary war they decided to be a bit nicer to colonies to avoid fighting them again

Or maybe the British realized that they weren't capable of controlling long distance colonies and instead of taking another humiliating defeat they simply gave in and saved themselves the trouble.

We sent the Declaration of Independence which was a formal letter telling Britain that we were free. Britain could have pulled out troops and let us be, but instead it decided to kill us.
