Americans Are Weird

20 Of The Weirdest Things About
America That Americans Don' t
Realize Are Weird
L Portion Sizes.
2. Flags everywhere. EVERYWHERE.
3. Price tags without tax included. How do you
know how much you' re spending until you
get to the cashier?
4. Tipping: It was incredibly hard for me to
wrap my head about how much is
appropriate for the service.
5. Advertising prescription drugs. That was the
weirdest one for me. "ask your doctor for
brand x antidepressants" type commercials
on TV. In the UK, your doctor tells you what
drugs you should take, not the other way
round.
6. Everything being designed around cars.
7. The sheer amount of commercials on the
television, and their lack of quality.
8. Aerosol cheese. Like seriously I would try it
at least once, but that **** looks like cancer.
s. a visiting Italian friend was very puzzled at
Americans' use of the phrase, "Oh, really?" in
group conversations. Somehow he took that
as a person challenging his opinion, when in
reality, it' s lust some habit a lot of us have
that basically means, "Interesting. Can you
elaborate?" The guy was red in the face after
an hour because he literally thought
everyone in our group was challenging every
single thing he said.
10. Your toilets are too low down and the stalls
have massive gaps around the door so that
people can see in. You can put a man on the
moon but can' t design a setup whereby I can
have a dump in comfortable privacy. Sort it
out America.
11. Pickles. Your hidden love for pickles. I have
been in the states for like 8 years and you
guys give a pickle with everything.
12. I find it really weird how college football
players are kind of celebrities. They' re
scrutinized and have fans and do TV
interviews, and it Just boggles my mind so
much. They' re just students that do an extra-
curricular activity! I don' t understand.
13. Jaywalking is a crime? I did this a lot in the
US without realizing it was supposed to be
illegal.
14. Why is bread in the USA so sweet? Sandwich
bread, hamburger buns, taste like cake but
Americans have no idea what you' re talking
about because they' re used to it.
15. Soft drink is free flowing, everywhere.
Mcdonalds you get a gigantic cup for a dollar
it comes with unlimited refills. Even at a
restaurant if you half finish your coke the
waitress will bring you another one. The first
time you' re like "hey I didn' t order this" but
then you realize it' s free.
16. You are all so loud! But friendly.
17. There is so much water in your toilet bowls!
Seriously, why so much?
18. A very blaser approach to credit card security.
Signatures don' t matter and no one uses a
PIN.
19. The pledge of allegiance is creepy. I know
most Americans lust say it because they have
to in school but if you listen to the words it
sounds strange to have children just chanting
it off
20. Lawyer adverts, everywhere. Saul Goodman
style.

But these are all reasons why the US is great in its own way. Forget our ****** politics and poor health care, just think of its people and our quirks.

I simultaneously love and hate being american.

Why single out college football players? Players of every sport are scrutinized and interviewed, whether it be in the U.S. or not

"They're just students that do an extracurricular activity!" The fact that they're exposed to the same as professionals yet they aren't professionals

that be because american civilization grew apart from the european ones...differences between cultures are even bigger when you compare our cultures to the eastern ones. who had been isolated from us even longer.

mcdonald portions are tiny as ****
#15 to #9 - anon (08/16/2015) [-]
Nope, I'm British and I went to America once.
Your medium portion sizes are bigger than our large ones.
It easily explained why Americans are so fat.
It also appears us British are fat not because we eat big portions, but that we eat a too many smaller portions.

Yeah, I didn't enjoy my time there, I won't be going back.
Americans are obnoxious as **** .

This sounds like a list made by somebody who hasn't actually ever even been to the US.

For example, every McDonald's I've been to doesn't give free refills, and I've been around.
"Oh, really?" isn't that exclusive. My Hungarian friend understands what it means, and he's never even been to the US.
While jaywalking is technically illegal, you're not going to get busted for it unless you're doing it in a high traffic area because nobody gives a **** .
Tipping isn't hard, it's considered a 15% MAX.
Pickles aren't all that common, really, unless you're in Cali.
Generally, doctors are still going to recommend you whatever medication they find best, regardless of what ads you see on TV. I fail to believe somebody has been in the US for "8 years" and never been to the doctor to know that.
User avatar #43 to #42 - AnomynousUser (08/16/2015) [-]
About the "unless you're in Cali" thing - the vast majority of tourists who come only ever visit Cali, NY, and maybe Florida or Yellowstone/Grand Canyon.

What they don't realize is that California has practically isolated itself (socially) to the extent of not only flaunting how different they are from the rest of the US, but splitting the state into a "SoCal" and "NorCal", most people in NYC are always in too much of a hurry to be polite, and Florida is full of crazies. So the few people who actually have visited the US and say "Oh, Americans are so this way" are usually basing their ideas around those.
User avatar #50 to #42 - commoncrunch (08/16/2015) [-]
1. The McD's you've been to are stingy. Here in Texas, it's any size $1 with free refills.
2. No comment
3. Correct. Jaywalking's more of a misdemeanor, and it's in place to punish you for being some inattentive knob who crosses the street staring at his phone without making sure a car or a bus isn't barreling down the road. You've seen that one webm of some dude with a bucket of paint run out from behind a school bus and get hit by a car? Dude's fault.
4. 15% is the general amount, not a maximum. You can put a five for a $30 restaurant bill, and that's reasonable, even though that's more than 15%.
5. It varies from area to area and state to state.
6. OP's content said "'ask your doctor for brand x medicine'" but most medicine commercials I've seen say to ask about and see if it's right for you, but yeah, generally the doctor knows what to prescribe you.
User avatar #28 - oosulley (08/16/2015) [-]
Its strikes me as really ******* retarded that jaywalking is a crime. If that was the case here, you'd have everyone from the PM down to the lowliest drunk up in court
User avatar #34 to #28 - sketchysketchist (08/16/2015) [-]
It was a law created to increase car sales.

Back when cars were only just becoming a thing and people still rode horse drawn carriages, people walked in the middle of the street because horses never ran to fast in public area, so the horses could stop in time or you had time to leap out of the way.
This was a huge issue because the big selling point for cars was the fact that they moved fast, which wasn't possible because people were walking in the middle of the rode. So they put the law in place so cars could zoom down the road and more people opted into buying a car.

Now, it's common knowledge that the road is for cars and the side walks are for pedestrians. However, this is a ******** law seeing how you should be able to cross if there are no cars in sight. If you look at many laws, you'll be hella confused as to why many of these road laws exist. Like why stop signs exist when we're better off with yield signs everywhere. Why can you turn right on red or make a u-turn on green in one area but another one has a barely noticable sign that'll get you fined. It's all a mystery.
User avatar #36 to #34 - chrisel (08/16/2015) [-]
You can go right on a red light?
User avatar #39 to #36 - sketchysketchist (08/16/2015) [-]
Yes, in most areas.
As long as there's no sign that says, "No Right on Red".

This is probably to reduce the amount of cars lined up the right side of the street, especially since most streets allow parking which takes up the right lane.
User avatar #24 - dovahnon (08/16/2015) [-]
I don't understand how it's hard to add tax onto a purchase, but that may be because I am used to it
User avatar #35 to #24 - chrisel (08/16/2015) [-]
Because if you are buying multiple things with odd numbers such as $65,95 then it get's hard to calculate and add everything when the stores and shops can easily put the ******* real price on it. I consider it falls advertisement.
User avatar #38 to #35 - dovahnon (08/16/2015) [-]
Well, I was just saying that from my experience it's not hard to add tax, and it can be done with estimation. A lot of people can also just use their phone to calculate tax too. I would also agree that they could include tax in each individual item's cost, but there may be reasons why they don't do it. (something about retailers shipping products to their stores, and each barcode that identifies the object and its price would have to be different for each state it is sent to maybe?) i'm not trying to sound like a dick, that's just the way I see it

Aerosol cheese is ******* disgusting, I used to like it when I was younger because its so convenient to eat with crackers, but holy **** , its gross.
User avatar #47 to #44 - conisnon (08/16/2015) [-]
I like It. It's like american queso, except it can be easily dispensed from a can. maybe it was just the aerosol cheese that I bought that I liked, I don't eat it very much.

"Drugs tell you what doctor should you take"?
#33 - Jeff C (08/16/2015) [-]
I'll admit the price w/o tax thing is really odd, but at the age of twenty I've grown so used to it that I pretty much just know what it'll be approximately by doing it in my head. 7% sales tax in NJ, 7 cents on the dollar. Something's $42? It'll be around $3 in tax, not THAT hard to do yourself but we still shouldn't have to

Depends on whether the store is a franchise or independently owned.

Independently owned places charge you for every glass, which pisses off everyone, not only because they're so used to free refills, but because everyone knows soda is cheap especially when bought in bulk like most restaurants do. Most people see this as Nickel and diming the customer, especially when the restaurant charges you over 3 dollars per glass of mostly ice. And I must add, that some of these places will charge you extra for a replacement drink if the server spills it or something else out of anyone's control causes it to be undrinkable, which is very infuriating.

Franchised places give you endless drinks because it's cheaper than giving you free chips or snacks, and many customers are gracious when they find out the extra glass of soda didn't cost them extra.

In conclusion, free drinks aren't weird. It's almost a basic principle of restaurant etiquette, since people only ask for a bit more to drink if they need it and you'd be an asshole to charge a paying customer extra to top off their drink.
