All the aliens are having a meeting: "Well, let's visit them in person!" "They have a long history of fighting, in the past 2000 years, they've only spent 200 in absolute peace, and they've built handheld device that shoot tiny pieces of metal at hundreds of metres per second. I'm not getting anywhere near those crazy *****."

>implying a race that can travel through space would be afraid of a gun. They could probably dominate the entire earth with just a couple of soldiers.

I would assume that most other races would've slacked off on war after interstellar travel, because they'd assume that we would be peaceful. Or, more likely, there would be some sort of impeding force on earth, like the frequency of rustling laves completely deafens them, or the water vapour in the air melts their armour and flesh.

Perhaps, but I have a hard time believing something that could travel through space and survive wouldn't survive the more stable parts of earth. We've gone to the depths of our oceans with protection, I guess they could make something to let them survive here on earth. Also, even if they abandoned war, they could still use their technology as a weapon. For example aren't cars made as weapons, but you can still crash them into building and ruin it. I don't know, they could throw out one of their engines that would blow us all up or something.

No, as agent K said, humans are panicky creatures. We are naturally afraid of anything beyond our safely understandable bubble, and highly prone to irrational behavior. Actually seeing an alien would cause worldwide pandemic meltdown.
