...but on some real **** , what is your guy's opinion on the "America the Beautiful" commercial sung in different languages?

Personally, I disliked it. At least the way they executed it. I'm fine with portraying united Americans of varying backgrounds, but singing the song in different languages was the wrong approach. They should've shown the faces of foreigners as they sung it in English, reflecting how they are still connected with their ethnic culture and haven't forsaken it, but have assimilated with American ways and are proud of their citizenship. Coke's commercial did exactly the opposite. It showed that the people who come here aren't trying to become American by adopting the de-facto national language and are instead promoting division and segregation by singing it in a foreign language. That's just me.
User avatar #89 to #7 - axeaddonis ONLINE (02/04/2014) [-]
Eat **** . We have no official language and French-speaking, Spanish-Speaking, and Dutch-speaking people, as well as people who speak a number of other languages, have been here just as ******* long as the English speakers. By showing a prejudice against people who speak another ******* language you're already being less ******* American than they are, because we were established on the idea that people are welcome regardless of nationality or ethnicity.

well, negro's have lots of kids, none of them speak english, mexicans are everywhere in my city, to the point where almost every store has "habla espanol" signs because otherwise they can't communicate with most of the people, and a lot of middle eastern/ asian people come here and are bi-lingual.

#77 to #64 - veryspecialagent (02/04/2014) [-]
English is commonly reffered to as the international standard, but somehow magically spanish is going to take over American? If you're serious, and basing it off of one city you live in that probably practically borders Mexico, then lord have mercy on your ignorant life.

Source: I have hispanic cousins-by-marriage, and 4 of the 5 kids barely know basic spanish.

We may be a melting pot, but we aren't a multicultural society. Singing it in different languages shows that these people have not integrated, instead, they're here, retaining their old culture, which is fine, so long as you have integrated. It should've been in English.
User avatar #45 to #7 - cheeziswin (02/04/2014) [-]
I thought it was a cool idea, and using the separate languages kind of showed how we accept people of all cultures. Of course, it sounds really strange in any language but English, but whatever. I agree with you on the fact that it does kind of segregate things. I'm not upset that they sung it in a different language, I just think it could have been executed better.
User avatar #41 to #7 - ragingflamingos (02/04/2014) [-]
I liked the idea, but not the execution. It was just way to long of a commercial.
User avatar #39 to #7 - Lambda (02/04/2014) [-]
There is actually no "official language" of the united states. Certain states have specified a language but there's no official language for the US. American English is the primary language, but it's not the official language.
So I think it's alright to have sung it in other languages. Everybody should learn English, of course, living in this country and not knowing English is a huge disadvantage.
User avatar #67 to #39 - rockamekishiko (02/04/2014) [-]
exactly. we thankfully have the freedom to speak whatever the **** language we want. But not speaking english hinders the non-speaker a hell of a lot more than the rest of the population. I hate how people think it affects them directly
User avatar #33 to #7 - ninjawildcat (02/04/2014) [-]
I'm mostly on your side on this but I still see it as a problem that most Americans get defensive about non native speakers. I live in the mid-west and I have a few hispanic co workers who speak perfect english but talk to each other in spanish just because. We have had sooo many customers go to the owner to tell him that they refuse to shop somewhere that employs non english speakers.Btw he tells them all to **** off and that they dont have much of a choice seeing as how it is the only grocery store for miles.
Also I believe there needs to be an attempt at learning other languages on both parts. Most americans do speak english but we also know there are many hispanic speakers, so I feel like some of us should at least try to learn their language too. Seems fair to me anyways.

TL;DR Hics/old people CAN BE ignorant ******** who that they are better than the rest of the world

holdup now, the reason there were no "civilizations" when we wandered into the continent is because European diseases had killed (this is a low estimate) 90% of the indigenous population. There are many documented independent nations in the Americas before the thirteen colonies.

I think it should have been in all English.
I'll probably get thumbed to hell for my opinion; but I'm not accepting of everybody bringing a different language to America. Everybody should speak English.

Why, exactly? Because it's going to become a problem if every ******* person in a room speaks a different language. I'm all for diversity and **** , but having different languages is going to divide us. Spanish will stick with spanish, english with english, french with french, etc.

And honestly it's annoying when I can't talk to certain people in the room because we have so many different languages. I'm not learning 10 different languages so that I can communicate with everybody. I don't have time for that **** .

there is no official language in the US, everyone has the freedom to speak what ever they want. Assimilating english is a personal choice and obviously of great benefits. I think its hard to live in an english speaking country and not learn it.

if pepsi made a coke-like soda and sold that as well as pepsi, they could potentially drive coke's sales way down.
#54 to #49 - pheonixinstinct (02/04/2014) [-]
however in doing so they would have a huge possibility of creating a monopoly and having to get rid of a lot of resources/break apart a bit. market shares would dive and even if it did recover it would be a loss in the long run for the company. Both coke and Pepsi need each other to keep the market competitive while still making money.

obviously you don't understand how gov't controls monopolies. Plus if they did become one and became too expensive, coke would gain more ground, and other competitors would enter the market long before gov't intervention would be needed.
User avatar #5 to #4 - rawfulz (02/03/2014) [-]
Don't you think Coke would notice if Pepsi suddenly started selling their recipe?

Also... Most people prefer either Coke or Pepsi, so why would Pepsi want to compete for half of the market that Coke already has?
