Ace pilot ladies and gents

Ok I've never been in the armed forces but this looks to be deceptively hard. Military folks help me out here. On a scale of 1-he has become the helicopter, how good was this?

Do you want a draft

Because that's how you let in a draft

I mean it's probably an 8-10 difficulty because even though the back is planted on the ground giving the pilot more support in terms of staying stationary. The soldiers exiting the bird are relieving a massive load on the air frame so the pilot needs to slowly take out power in order to save the bird from nosing up too much like you see it do a little of. Also it looks like they are at a decently high elevation which also plays into how much power the pilot has to manage keeping half of the aircraft at a hover. So, yea, in simple terms, still pretty hard to do.
User avatar #2 to #1 - agnaraed [OP](01/07/2016) [-]
thanks coolna

DId you use to fly helis?
#3 to #2 - coolnamestaken (01/07/2016) [-]
I'm a crew chief in a UH-60, so even though it's not the same as the 47 I have picked up on stuff that's going on up front in terms of power management and drift control.
User avatar #4 to #3 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
46's. Those should be Marines and a Marine pilot, id say 7-8 (Marine helicopter pilots train to make drops and extractions in odd terrain)

I was cargo a few times on these, lots of vomit.
User avatar #7 to #4 - trostell (01/07/2016) [-]
Actually looks a lot more like a 47. The 46 only has the lower bulge in the rear quarter, nor do the exhausts face the rear, instead facing directly outward. The nose on a 46 is also rounded, and doesn't jut out like the one in the content.

I am almost 100% certain that's a CH-47.
User avatar #8 to #7 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
I hadn't noticed that. Good eye. You know what else the 47 has 5 bubble windows and the 46 only has 4, pretty sure that one has 5.

I concied the point .
User avatar #9 to #8 - trostell (01/07/2016) [-]
The big tip-offs are the nose, the exhausts, and that bulging lower section, I used to have a bit of trouble telling them apart too.
User avatar #10 to #9 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
Dont forget the landing gear, 46s only had 3 where the 47 had 4.
User avatar #11 to #10 - trostell (01/07/2016) [-]
That's one of the finer details that you can't always get a good look at, but still a fair point.

Chaps are Brits and the Chinook is most likely RAF. Probably HC3 variant but hard to tell.
User avatar #65 to #55 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
How can you tell they're brits? Not that I doubt you just curious?
User avatar #69 to #65 - crazypebble (01/07/2016) [-]
Blokes in the foreground are Parachute Regiment. Difficult to tell which battalion as the TRFs are hard to make out, but looks like 2 Para.
User avatar #71 to #69 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
Might be why I didnt quite recognize it. But I don't think the was the HC mk3, from what I saw they only made 8 of them and they had a very sketchy beginning (apparently just the mk3). While I believe it could be a HC?it is not to probable that its a mk3 unless they made major advancements in the past 8 years.
User avatar #72 to #71 - crazypebble (01/07/2016) [-]
Could be a HC2. Since if this is 2 PARA then it'll most likely put the year at 2008. HC3 weren't doing test till 2009 I believe. HC4 and onwards didn't appear till 2011.
User avatar #68 to #65 - crazypebble (01/07/2016) [-]
Uniform and equipment. Desert DPM camouflage, SA80s, Osprey body armour and Mk6 helmets.
#5 to #4 - coolnamestaken (01/07/2016) [-]
ahhh my mistake, guess I shoulda put 2 and 2 together for the type of personnel being dropped
User avatar #6 to #5 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
Its all good, depending on when this is the uniforms can be hard to distinguish, what tipped me off were the windows, thos tiny littl round bastards on the 46, you have to practice ditching a 46 and a 53 (Im sure you had to go through a similar helo dunker for UH60s(sweet ass chopper by the way!)) I hated those little ass things.
#13 to #6 - coolnamestaken (01/07/2016) [-]
Oh god dunker :o. That was an interesting day

If that's an 8-10, then the **** the coast guard pilots do must be a 20. I respect coolnamestaken's experience, and agree this maneuver is somewhat difficult but I think his scale is off.

I might dig up some videos in a while when I'm not supposed to be working, but the Coast Guard pilots (and some of the Navy pilots) are real ******* aces. They fly over raging seas with huge swells and generally keep the helicopters at the same height above the water at all times (i.e. they have to rise and fall with the waves). Not to mention they often have to touch down on ships that are being pitched about. Like I said, this is more of a Coast Guard thing than a Navy thing, but both are impressive.

There are also Cattle Ranchers in Australia that use small helicopters to herd cattle; they can do some really amazing aerobatics that are much more difficult than this.

Again, I don't disagree that this would be difficult for most pilots, but if ten is the hardest-of-the-hard, this ain't it. I would bet most coast guard, Marine, and Army pilots could pull this off; they train for drop offs like this. Being able to touch the end down like this is essential for delivering crew into rough terrain, like the mountains we are fighting in in Afghanistan.
User avatar #66 to #40 - idhitjack (01/07/2016) [-]
But is the scale simy held to military pilots or all? If all then 7-9 would be a fair assesment with almost everything Navy Coast Guard and Marine pilots doing being a 10 do to the increased difficulties with sea and winds.

So I don't wanna say its not hard, but it isn't too rare. It's called the pinnacle maneuver and it's taught to CH-47 pilots. It's used to drop off people without landing or drop them off where there isn't much room to land (ie: a house). But yeah. This isn't like Ace level stuff An ace helicopter pilot must be pretty skilled for shooting down enemy aircraft.

User avatar #21 - Rei (01/07/2016) [-]

i was once in the vicinity of a helicopter landing and taking off (medical helicopter with pilot, crew of 2, and space for 2...rafts(?))
Even if i was standing 15-20 meters away, it felt like my face was getting polished with sand, and i had dirt in my teeth for a few days afterward. why aren't these soldier guys flying about from the force of the wind from this **** ?
User avatar #39 to #23 - unladenswallow (01/07/2016) [-]
Probably helps that they're each carrying a third of their body weight in gear. Not enough surface area to weight ratio for it to do more than exfoliate their skin vigorously.

Average we trained for pinnacle landings all the time. If he was a **** pilot his IP would not let him do it during a mission till he was proficient.

i showed my ssgt this and said he knew one of the guy leaving that bird.

Eh, the pilot has a long way to go before he becomes the helicopter.

This was difficult, but not god-tier impossible.
