We'll forget about him by next week. Can you really say you can keep him in your daily thoughts? Keep a reminder, or anything to remember his sacrifice?

I still remember the guy who died holding the door at Virginia Tech while his students escaped through the window. I remember meeting a cab driver that was a survivor of the attack on the USS Cole. I remember Jessica Lynch, a solider that was badly wounded in the line of duty long after her 15 minutes. I'm still well aware that there is this ******* Kony running around in Africa somewhere.

Speak for yourself. I don't forget **** .

Humans are empiric creatures. And my experiences taught me that material gains are the only things that matter in the end, because when we die we will all go to that void of nothingness and our conciousness will dissapear forever.

Sorry if you ahve a religion, i've given up faith. No dandy afterlife for me, I guess.

User avatar #104 to #103 - totallytito (12/06/2015) [-]
I don't have a religion.
That is exactly why I see death with such an "unusually" higher regard.
An entire world was destroyed in the perspective of a man
for the sake of another human being.

To surrender one's own existence for the satisfaction of preserving another.
I can't even comprehend how it works. The least I can do is appreciate his action.
User avatar #106 to #104 - hwaraam (12/06/2015) [-]
I don't.

That action is childish, because he was surely relying in a rewarding afterlife, and, In a way, selfish, as your subconcious tells you :''For this great suffering, you will receive greater rewards on the -other side- ''

Most probably, at least.
That's why it lacks my respect.

I would respect it if he said, before: "Welp, I am probably wasting away all my happiness and the things I hard earned, for nothing because I get no real retribution, only cold death and the nothingness of the beyond, and yet, lets roll ********** ."

But, for all we know, he probably did it to be an ''hero''. Welp, ************************ . The dude became one. For some 4-5 days. Afterwards, everyone will forget about him.

So no, I
User avatar #108 to #106 - totallytito (12/06/2015) [-]
Maybe he was taking his age into account, and sacrificed his experienced life so that another human being can have the chance to grow older?
User avatar #110 to #108 - hwaraam (12/06/2015) [-]
....well, that's a logical and practical option which didn't even cross my mind.

It could very well be.

But tell me true; talking about humans, and the people of this era in geenral: Do you really think they are so practical and rational when exposed suddenly to situations of such danger and risk?

and yes, now you could answer me: ''Right because they stop being practical and rational, they do things such as those sacrifices''

But I don't mean that. I mean, do you really think a human would thinks so fast, and cope with it, ''I have too few time left, this hot gurl has much more, so she should be able to keep on living, lets protect her at the expense of my own life'' ?
User avatar #114 to #110 - totallytito (12/06/2015) [-]
I can't be 100% certain,
because not every human being is the same.

In japan, the elderly are trying to clean up the radiation damage and risking cancer for themselves just to prevent their children from having to bear the burden of such a monumental task with high risks.

Thousands of people.
User avatar #115 to #114 - hwaraam (12/06/2015) [-]

Counter Argument: What tells you he would be thinking rationally in this situation to go "OH **** IF I SACRIFICE MYSELF I'LL GET A BETTER AFTERLIFE."

No, a lot of people are simply protective people. The shooting was at a workplace, so he likely knew the woman, was possibly even good friends. And when the shooting started, his protective instincts kicked in, and he did what he could to protect her.

I like to think that I would do something heroic in that situation, but the truth is I probably wouldn't. And it makes me feel kinda guilty.

For example, there was this huge accident in the parking lot at my old high school after a football game. I saw other students grab people and push them out of the way of the oncoming car, and I saw people ushering away any crowds so the people injured could get the help first. And all I did was just dive out of the way of the car, and didn't grab anyone to save them. There was a girl standing next to me that got hit, she lived though, she's okay. and even to this day I feel bad about it. I felt like a coward. :/

It sucks that we will forget about all of these heroes, but the list of names is way too long. As long as we have remembered them and could remember their faces when their names appear then that is good enough.

I have a feeling if people were allowed open carry gun law, a lot of these shooting would end with out as much bloodshed. not saying that open carry law is perfect but something has to be done about this **** .

It may have been a girl's name, but the combination of his beard and saving his co-worker's life has the combined masculinity of a dozen bare-chested men wrestling bears with knives, and has thus made it a man's name. It is no longer a woman's name.
