A Century Later...

On june 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a bosnian terrorist organization known as the Black Hand. This event was often called the first shot of WWI, however the official date of the war's start is on july 28th of the same year, when austria-hungary declared war on serbia. The war continued for four more years, before an armistice was signed on november 11th, 1918. By then, 37 million people, both civilian and military, had died.
One century has passed since war was first declared... and I haven't heard anyone talking about it, on the news or on social media.

It's starting to fade from the living memory. And people are more interested by.... Who's interesting right now? Is it still Kardashians? I don't keep up.

Did you know, some british artillery kept shelling german positions even after the official cease-fire? Reason, they did not want to haul their ordinance back.

I was not aware of that but it makes the fact that I was playing "Europa Universalis 4" and started a world war over a disagreement with France (I was Prussia and wanted to take over Nurnburg so I could form Germany) pretty funny.

it's always ww2 this ww2 that. very rarely does ww1 ever get talked about. A lot of ww1 memorial sites are falling apart as well compared to the ww2 ones. it's kind of sad

**candora rolled image** Sorry. History was never really my strong suit.

Honestly, I think we're waiting for the major events of the war to kick off here in NA. From what I've been told Europe has already done quite a few "celebrations"

It doesn't matter if we remember the tragedy, it only matters that we hold its teaching as long as possible and hope such a thing never happens again.

There's not really anyone left alive to interview, not a whole lot of video footage like in subsequent wars, and it was largely overshadowed by WWII (even though it was, in a very real sense, the cause of WWII).

It's sad that even the History Channel seemed to forget....

thank you for reminding me. World War Won is my second favorite world war to read, watch and learn about.
WW2 is one of the few cases where the sequel was better then the original
