Just took this in school few months ago (Apprentice Electrician). The three phases of electricity are 120 degrees out of sync with each other, each phase runs at (In north America anyways) 60 hz. So every second, each phase is actually putting out 0 volts, 60 120 times a second (Once going up, once going down), so because these three phases are running at different times, we get a rotating effect. I'm glad other people are at least a little interested. Pic related; me at work the other day
