I think it was /suppose/ to feel awkward. Everything about him is sort of this awkward guy who lost all emotions and is now leading an army of superbeings. I dunno, it honestly felt spot on.
There's surprisingly few scenes like that, and they get even fewer as it progresses(from a LN reader.).
