these guys do a series called man at arms (reforged is a spinoff on the same channel, they do similar stuff, but it's a different smithy) that has created most of fully sharpened forged replicas of these swords.

we are talking about the most popular swords in pop culture.

berserk is somewhat known in america. somewhat succesfull in japan. and pretty famous on fj

its not famous on large scale enough to make it to the list...
User avatar #64 to #56 - joeyliquid (12/05/2014) [-]
It's actually quite widely known in Japan among manga/anime fans. Notice I didn't say weeabos. Dirty creatures. It's got a extremely good reputation like Cowboy Bebop, although not as globally known. If I was to sum it up, it's like the manga that sit's upon the aging throne of it's genre.

Not very iconic and well-known if I had to think about it, and I'm a ******* nerd. WoW was never as big as everyone claimed it was and most people have absolutely no knowledge of it whatsoever
#13 to #12 - moosepaw (12/05/2014) [-]
Warcraft 3 FT was really my intention. But I beg to differ, I think it's top ten worthy.
User avatar #14 to #13 - iamkagji ONLINE (12/05/2014) [-]
It's not, though. Most people will recognize every one of those swords simply by looking at them. Most people would not be able to identify Frostmourne at a glance like that, Warcraft never had that sort of cultural impact outside its niche audience. That's why these swords are on the list, they transcended their targeted group and now everyone knows about them.
#22 to #14 - anon (12/05/2014) [-]
Frostmourne is definitely more iconic and well known than the Crouching tiger one...
Personally I'm not familiar with Thundercats, but then I feel that I can't have an opinion about it either
#15 to #14 - moosepaw (12/05/2014) [-]
That is your opinion. You claim to have sufficient grounds of statistically weighting the popularity of each sword as being more popular and lore glorified than Frostmourne. I guarantee if you took a poll on this site, most would take Frostmourne over AT LEAST 3-4 of those listed.

Popularity does matter as no one cares about some random trilogy behind one sword that no one has ever read about. But a combination of the significance to the lore as well as popularity, Frostmourne would definitely make it's place on this list.

User avatar #127 to #14 - blackrookfiend (12/06/2014) [-]
Conan the Barbarian is a dated as **** movie that very few folks in nerd-dom of our peer group will recognize, and doesn't deserve a spot over the Dragonborn's sword, much less Frostmourne.

"fictional" swords. I guess the author put Excalibur in the category of pseudo-historical/mythical swords because there´s a ******** of people thinking that it actually exists/existed.

Kinda like you wouldn´t put Jesus down in the "top 10 fictional zombies" or something.

Eh, that comparison stands on weak legs, doesn´t it?
User avatar #96 to #34 - eiaisqzbsesb (12/06/2014) [-]
There is historical evidence of a sword, presumably called Excalibur which was passed down through the hands of early briton nobility. The legends probably grew forth from this.
User avatar #97 to #96 - ljxjlos (12/06/2014) [-]
Kinda proves my point, then, doesn´t it?

Fantasy Weapons Scrutinized: Cloud's Buster Sword busted! The main problem is that the weight and balancing would be utterly ridiculous.
User avatar #193 to #90 - angelious ONLINE (12/06/2014) [-]
he addressed the weight issue.
User avatar #195 to #193 - eiaisqzbsesb (12/06/2014) [-]
Yes, but his calculations were incorrect. The buster sword has been shown as rusted, and a zinc-steel alloy won't rust. Also, the main problem with the weight issue is the balancing.
User avatar #196 to #195 - angelious ONLINE (12/06/2014) [-]
the balancing is hard. but technically it wouldnt be too impossible to wield it.

and as far as we know we still dont know what the sword is made out of so its hard to determine the weigh.
User avatar #197 to #196 - eiaisqzbsesb (12/06/2014) [-]
Look at the video I sent you. The centrifugal force created when you swing something of the buster sword's weight would be so strong that you would need to weigh over a ton in order to counter it, meaning that it is quite litteraly impossible for a human to use.
User avatar #198 to #197 - angelious ONLINE (12/06/2014) [-]

User avatar #143 to #131 - banwagon (12/06/2014) [-]
Excalibur was never seen by anyone, because of this it's appearance is not well known, and therefor not easily identifiable at a glance
User avatar #189 to #143 - pitchdark (12/06/2014) [-]
There are like a thousand different versions. This list would be better with just the top 10 of those. I personally would use the one from Merlin.
User avatar #190 to #189 - banwagon (12/06/2014) [-]
the numarity of Excaliburs is why it was excluded from the list, as there is no one right look for Excalibur, it is therefor not an identifiable sword, it is however a well known.
User avatar #191 to #190 - pitchdark (12/06/2014) [-]
I would think just one of the variations alone would trump several on this list. I can kinda accpet the choice not to put it in, but the sword in the stone should at least be here.
User avatar #206 to #191 - banwagon (12/07/2014) [-]
if you read the translated text of the legend, it is just a plane sword, not decorated or anything, but it has an inscription on the hilt. "who ever pulleth this sword from wince it rests is the rightful king of Albion" Albion being the ancient name of modern day england
